Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 14323
It is narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he used to offer the Witr prayer. He replied: "After the Isha prayer, in the first part of the night." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked the same question to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He replied: "In the last part of the night." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Abu Bakr gave preference to that aspect which has certainty, and Umar gave preference to that aspect which has strength."

سیدنا جابر رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ نبی ﷺ نے صدیق اکبر سے پوچھا کہ آپ نماز وتر کب پڑھتے ہیں انہوں نے عرض کیا: نماز عشاء کے بعد رات کے پہلے پہر میں، یہی سوال نبی ﷺ نے سیدنا عمر سے پوچھا: تو انہوں نے عرض کیا: رات کے آخری پہر میں، نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا کہ ابوبکر تم نے اس پہلو کو ترجیح دی جس میں اعتماد ہے اور عمر نے اس پہلو کو ترجیح دی جس میں قوت ہے۔
Saina Jabir (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai ki ek martaba Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne Siddiq Akbar se pucha ki aap namaz witr kab parhte hain unhon ne arz kiya: Namaz Isha ke bad raat ke pehle pahar mein, yahi sawal Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne Sayidna Umar se pucha: to unhon ne arz kiya: raat ke aakhri pahar mein, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ki Abubakar tum ne is pehlu ko tarjih di jis mein aitmad hai aur Umar ne is pehlu ko tarjih di jis mein quwwat hai.
قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ:" مَتَى تُوتِرُ؟" قَالَ: أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ بَعْدَ الْعَتَمَةِ، قَالَ:" فَأَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ؟"، قَالَ: آخِرَ اللَّيْلِ، قَالَ:" أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالثِّقَةِ، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا عُمَرُ، فَأَخَذْتَ بِالْقُوَّةِ".
