The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 1871
Akarmah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) burned some apostates alive. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) found out, he said: "If I were him, I would not have burned them alive because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Do not punish anyone with the punishment of Allah.' Rather, I would have killed them because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Whoever changes his religion, then kill him." When the news of this reached Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he expressed regret (that he did not know of this before).

عکرمہ رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کچھ مرتدین کو نذر آتش کر دیا، سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کو پتہ چلا تو فرمایا: اگر میں ہوتا تو انہیں آگ میں نہ جلاتا کیونکہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا ہے کہ ”اللہ کے عذاب جیسا عذاب کسی کو نہ دو“، بلکہ میں انہیں قتل کر دیتا کیونکہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا ہے کہ ”جو شخص مرتد ہو کر اپنا دین بدل لے، اسے قتل کر دو“، جب سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو اس بات کا علم ہوا تو انہوں نے اس پر اظہار افسوس کیا (کہ یہ بات پہلے سے معلوم کیوں نہ ہو سکی؟)۔
Ukrama rahmatullah alaih kehte hain ki ek martaba Sayyiduna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kuch murtadeen ko nazr aatish kar diya, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ko pata chala to farmaya: Agar main hota to unhen aag mein na jalata kyunki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya hai ki “Allah ke azab jaisa azab kisi ko na do”, balkay main unhen qatl kar deta kyunki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya hai ki “Jo shakhs murtad ho kar apna deen badal le, usay qatl kar do”, jab Sayyiduna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ko is baat ka ilm hua to unhon ne is par izhaar afsos kiya (keh yeh baat pehle se maloom kyun na ho saki?).
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ , أَنَّ عَلِيًّا حَرَّقَ نَاسًا ارْتَدُّوا عَنِ الإِسْلَامِ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَقَالَ: لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُحَرِّقَهُمْ بِالنَّارِ، وَإِنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَال:" لَا تُعَذِّبُوا بِعَذَابِ اللَّهِ"، وَكُنْتُ قَاتِلَهُمْ لِقَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم:" مَنْ بَدَّلَ دِينَهُ، فَاقْتُلُوهُ"، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عَلِيًّا كَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ، فَقَالَ: وَيْحَ ابْنِ أُمِّ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ.
