Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 19370
It is narrated by Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed, "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]", I took two threads, one black and one white, and placed them under a pillow. I kept looking at them, but the black thread did not become distinct from the white, nor the white from the black. When morning came, I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and told him the whole story. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Your pillow was too wide! What is meant are the white and black threads of daylight and darkness."

حضرت عدی رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ جب یہ آیت نازل ہوئی " رمضان کی رات میں تم اس وقت تک کھاتے پیتے رہو جب تک تمہارے سامنے سفید دھاگے کالے دھاگے سے واضح اور ممتاز نہ ہوجائے " تو میں نے دو دھاگے لئے ایک کالے رنگ کا اور ایک سفید رنگ کا اور انہیں ایک تکیے کے نیچے رکھ لیا میں انہیں دیکھتا رہا لیکن کالا دھاگہ سفید سے اور سفید دھاگہ کالے سے جدا نہ ہوا صبح ہوئی تو میں نبی کریم ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور سارا واقعہ بتایا نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا تمہارا تکیہ تو بڑا چوڑا ہے اس سے مراد دن کی روشنی اور رات کی تاریکی ہے۔
Hazrat Adi Radi Allaho Anho se marvi hai ki jab ye ayat nazil hui "Ramzan ki raat mein tum us waqt tak khate peete raho jab tak tumhare samne sufaid dhage kale dhage se wazeh aur mumtaz na ho jae" to maine do dhage liye ek kale rang ka aur ek sufaid rang ka aur unhen ek takiye ke neeche rakh liya mein unhen dekhta raha lekin kala dhagha sufaid se aur sufaid dhagha kale se juda na hua subah hui to mein Nabi Kareem Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ki khidmat mein hazir hua aur sara waqea bataya Nabi Kareem Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne farmaya tumhara takiya to bada chora hai is se murad din ki roshni aur raat ki tareeki hai.
حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُصَيْنٌ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، قَالَ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ: وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ سورة البقرة آية 187، قَالَ: عَمَدْتُ إِلَى عِقَالَيْنِ: أَحَدُهُمَا أَسْوَدُ، وَالْآخَرُ أَبْيَضُ، فَجَعَلْتُهُمَا تَحْتَ وِسَادِي، قَالَ: ثُمَّ جَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمَا، فَلَا تُبِينُ لِي الْأَسْوَدَ مِنَ الْأَبْيَضِ، وَلَا الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الْأَسْوَدِ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِالَّذِي صَنَعْتُ، فَقَالَ: " إِنْ كَانَ وِسَادُكَ إِذًا لَعَرِيضًا، إِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ بَيَاضُ النَّهَارِ مِنْ سَوَادِ اللَّيْلِ" .
