Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 19919
It is narrated on the authority of Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the meaning of the words "and the even and the odd" in Surah Al-Fajr. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "It refers to prayers, some of which are in pairs and some of which are odd."

حضرت عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ کسی شخص نے نبی ﷺ سے سورت الفجر کے لفظ " والشفع والوتر " کا معنی پوچھا تو نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا اس سے مراد نماز ہے کہ بعض نمازیں جفت ہیں اور بعض طاق۔
Hazrat Imran bin Hissain (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai keh kisi shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se Surah Al-Fajr ke lafz "wal shaf'i wal watr" ka mani poocha to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya is se murad namaz hai keh baaz namazen juft hain aur baaz taaq.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عِصَامٍ ، أَنَّ شَيْخًا حَدَّثَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنْ الشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ، فَقَالَ:" هِيَ الصَّلَاةُ: بَعْضُهَا شَفْعٌ، وَبَعْضُهَا وَتْرٌ" .
