Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 19935
It is narrated on the authority of Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the meaning of the words "by the even and the odd" in Surah Al-Fajr. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "This refers to prayer, as some prayers are in even numbers and some are in odd numbers."

حضرت عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ کسی شخص نے نبی ﷺ سے سورة الفجر کے لفظ والشفع والوتر کا معنی پوچھا تو نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا اس سے مراد نماز ہے کہ بعض نمازیں جفت ہیں اور بعض طاق۔
Hazrat Imran bin Husain (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai ki kisi shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se Surah Al-Fajr ke lafz Wal-Shaf'i Wal-Watr ka mane puchha to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya is se murad namaz hai ki baaz namazein juft hain aur baaz taq.
حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ قَتَادَةُ عَنِ الشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ، فقال: ثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ عِصَامٍ الضُّبَعِيُّ ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ , أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " هِيَ الصَّلَاةُ: مِنْهَا شَفْعٌ، وَمِنْهَا وَتْرٌ" .
