The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2135
Hakam bin A'raj said: Once I went to see Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, while he was sitting, reclining against the well of Zamzam. I sat down with him, and he was an excellent companion. I said: Tell me about the observance of 'Ashura. He said: What do you want to know about it? I said: About the fast; that is, on what day should I fast? He said: When you see the new moon of Muharram, count the days, and when it is the morning of the ninth, then fast. I said: Is this how the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to fast? He said: Yes.

حکم بن اعرج کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ میں سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، وہ چاہ زمزم سے ٹیک لگائے بیٹھے تھے، میں بھی ان کے پاس جا کر بیٹھ گیا، وہ بہترین ہم نشین تھے، میں نے ان سے عرض کیا کہ مجھے یوم عاشورہ کے متعلق کچھ بتائیے، انہوں نے فرمایا کہ تم اس کے متعلق کس حوالے سے پوچھنا چاہ رہے ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا کہ روزے کے حوالے سے، یعنی کس دن کا روزہ رکھوں؟ فرمایا: جب محرم کا چاند دیکھ لو تو اس کی تاریخ شمار کرتے رہو، جب نویں تاریخ کی صبح ہو تو روزہ رکھ لو، میں نے عرض کیا کہ کیا نبی ﷺ اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے؟ فرمایا: ہاں۔
Hukm bin Arj kahte hain ki ek martaba main Syedna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ki khidmat mein hazir hua, woh chah Zamzam se teek lagaye baithe the, main bhi unke paas ja kar baith gaya, woh behtarin hum nashi the, maine unse arz kiya ki mujhe Yom Ashura ke mutalliq kuch bataiye, unhon ne farmaya ki tum iske mutalliq kis hawale se puchna chah rahe ho? Maine arz kiya ki roza ke hawale se, yani kis din ka roza rakhoon? Farmaya: Jab Muharram ka chand dekh lo to uski tarikh shumar karte raho, jab noween tarikh ki subah ho to roza rakh lo, maine arz kiya ki kya Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) isi tarah roza rakhte the? Farmaya: Haan.
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْأَعْرَجِ ، قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَهُوَ مُتَّكِئٌ عِنْدَ زَمْزَمَ، فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ، وَكَانَ نِعْمَ الْجَلِيسُ، فَقُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ , قَالَ:" عَنْ أَيِّ بَالِهِ تَسْأَلُ؟" , قُلْتُ: عَنْ صَوْمِهِ، أَيّ يومٍ أصومُه؟ قَالَ:" إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ، فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعَةٍ، فَأَصْبِحْ مِنْهَا صَائِمًا" , قُلْتُ: أَكَذَاكَ كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ:" نَعَمْ".
