The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2540
Hakam bin A'raj reported: Once I went to Ibn 'Abbas while he was reclining against his sheet near the well of Zamzam. I sat down by his side and he was the best man to sit beside. I said to him: Tell me about the fast of the day of 'Ashura. He said: What aspect of it (do you want to know)? I said: About keeping fast on it. He said: When you see the new moon of Muharram, count (the days) and observe fast on the ninth (of Muharram). I said: Did the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) observe fast like this? He said: Yes.

حکم بن اعرج کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ میں سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا، وہ چاہ زمزم کے قریب اپنی چادر سے ٹیک لگائے بیٹھے تھے، میں بھی ان کے پاس جا کر بیٹھ گیا، وہ بہترین ہم نشین تھے، میں نے ان سے عرض کیا کہ مجھے یوم عاشورہ کے متعلق کچھ بتائیے، انہوں نے فرمایا کہ تم اس کے متعلق کس حوالے سے پوچھنا چاہ رہے ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا کہ روزے کے حوالے سے، یعنی کس دن کا روزہ رکھوں؟ فرمایا: جب محرم کا چاند دیکھ لو تو اس کی تاریخ شمار کرتے رہو، جب نویں تاریخ کی صبح ہو تو روزہ رکھ لو، میں نے عرض کیا کہ کیا نبی ﷺ اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے؟ فرمایا: ہاں۔
Hukm bin Arj kehte hain ki ek martaba main Sayyidna Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anhuma ki khidmat main hazir hua, woh chah Zamzam ke qareeb apni chadar se tek lagaye baithe thay, main bhi un ke pass ja kar baith gaya, woh behtarin hum nashi thay, main ne un se arz kiya ke mujhe Yaum-e-Ashoora ke mutalliq kuch bataiye, unhon ne farmaya ke tum is ke mutalliq kis hawale se puchna chah rahe ho? Main ne arz kiya ke roza ke hawale se, yani kis din ka roza rakhon? Farmaya: Jab Muharram ka chand dekh lo to is ki tarikh shumar karte raho, jab nowain tarikh ki subah ho to roza rakh lo, main ne arz kiya ke kya Nabi Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam isi tarah roza rakhte thay? Farmaya: Haan.
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ أَبُو خُشَيْنَةَ أَخُو عِيسَى النَّحْوِيِّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ الْأَعْرَجِ ، قَالَ:" جَلَسْتُ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ عِنْدَ بِئْرِ زَمْزَمَ، فَجَلَسْتُ إِلَيْهِ، وَكَانَ نِعْمَ الْجَلِيسُ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ عَاشُورَاءَ؟ فَقَالَ: عَنْ أَيِّ بَالِهِ تَسْأَلُ؟ قُلْتُ: عَنْ صِيَامِهِ , قَالَ:" إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ، فَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ مِنْ تَاسِعِهِ، فَصُمْ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ" , قُلْتُ: أَهَكَذَا كَانَ يَصُومُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.
