The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2986
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Salim was passing by some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) while grazing his goats. He greeted them with Salam. They said that he only greeted us to save his life. Saying this, they went towards him and killed him and brought his goats to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Upon this, this verse was revealed: "And do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace "You are not a believer," aspiring for the goods of worldly life..." (4:94)

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ بنو سلیم کا ایک آدمی اپنی بکریوں کو ہانکتے ہوئے چند صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم کے پاس سے گزرا، اس نے انہیں سلام کیا، وہ کہنے لگے کہ اس نے ہمیں سلام اس لئے کیا ہے تاکہ اپنی جان بچا لے، یہ کہہ کر وہ اس کی طرف بڑھے اور اسے قتل کر دیا، اور اس کی بکریاں لے کر نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو گئے، اس پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی: «﴿وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا . . . . .﴾ [النساء: 94] » ”جو شخص تمہیں سلام کرے، اس سے یہ مت کہا کرو کہ تو مسلمان نہیں ہے، تم دنیا کی زندگی کا سامان چاہتے ہو . . . . .۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Banu Saleem ka ek aadmi apni bakriyon ko hankte huye chand Sahaba Kiram (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ke paas se guzara, usne unhen salam kiya, woh kehne lage ki usne hamen salam is liye kiya hai taaki apni jaan bacha le, yeh keh kar woh uski taraf badhe aur use qatl kar diya, aur uski bakriyan lekar Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein hazir ho gaye, is par yeh ayat nazil hui: "Wa la taqulu liman alqa ilaikumus salam lasta muminan tabtaghoona aradal hayatial dunya....." [Al-Nisa: 94] "Jo shakhs tumhen salam kare, usse yeh mat kaha karo ki tu musalman nahi hai, tum duniya ki zindagi ka saman chahte ho.....".
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ:" مَرَّ نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ، مَعَهُ غَنَمٌ لَهُ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالُوا: مَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا تَعَوُّذًا مِنْكُمْ، فَعَمَدُوا إِلَيْهِ فَقَتَلُوهُ، وَأَخَذُوا غَنَمَهُ، فَأَتَوْا بِهَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَلا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا سورة النساء آية 94" إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ.
