The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2997
Narrated by Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him), that once during the Prophet's (peace be upon him) fatal illness, Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) came out of the Prophet's house. People asked, "O Abu Al-Hasan! How is the Prophet (peace be upon him)?" He said, "Praise be to Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) is better since morning." Ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said that upon this, Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) held Ali’s hand and said, "Don't you see? By Allah! The Prophet (peace be upon him) will pass away due to this illness. I recognize the signs of death on the faces of Banu Abdul Muttalib. Come, let's go to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and ask him who will be the Caliph after him. If it is one of us, we will know, and if it is someone else, we will talk to the Prophet (peace be upon him) so that he can advise the future Caliph regarding us." Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah! If we ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) for it and he refuses, people will never give us the Caliphate. Therefore, I will never ask him for it."

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نبی ﷺ کے مرض الوفات کے زمانے میں نبی ﷺ کے یہاں سے باہر نکلے تو لوگوں نے پوچھا: ابوالحسن! نبی ﷺ کیسے ہیں؟ انہوں نے بتایا کہ اب تو صبح سے نبی ﷺ الحمدللہ ٹھیک ہیں، سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما فرماتے ہیں کہ اس پر سیدنا عباس رضی اللہ عنہ نے سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کا ہاتھ پکڑ کر فرمایا: کیا تم دیکھ نہیں رہے؟ واللہ! اس بیماری سے نبی ﷺ (جانبر نہ ہو سکیں گے اور) وصال فرما جائیں گے، میں بنو عبدالمطلب کے چہروں پر موت کے وقت طاری ہونے والی کیفیت کو پہچانتا ہوں، اس لئے آؤ، نبی ﷺ کے پاس چلتے ہیں اور ان سے پوچھتے ہیں کہ ان کے بعد خلافت کسے ملے گی؟ اگر ہم ہی میں ہوئی تو ہمیں اس کا علم ہو جائے گا اور اگر ہمارے علاوہ کسی اور میں ہوئی تو ہم نبی ﷺ سے بات کر لیں گے تاکہ وہ ہمارے متعلق آنے والے خلیفہ کو وصیت فرما دیں، سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! اگر ہم نے نبی ﷺ سے اس کی درخواست کی اور نبی ﷺ نے ہماری درخواست قبول کرنے سے انکار کر دیا تو لوگ کبھی بھی ہمیں خلافت نہیں دیں گے، اس لئے میں تو کبھی بھی ان سے درخواست نہیں کروں گا۔
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ek martaba Sayyidna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke marz ul wafat ke zamane mein Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke yahan se bahar nikle to logon ne poocha: Abu Al Hassan! Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) kaise hain? Unhon ne bataya ki ab to subah se Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) Alhamdulillah theek hain, Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a farmate hain ki is par Sayyidna Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne Sayyidna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ka hath pakar kar farmaya: kya tum dekh nahin rahe? Wallahi! Is bimari se Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) (jaanbar na ho saken ge aur) wisal farma jayen ge, mein Banu Abdul Muttalib ke chehron par mout ke waqt tari hone wali kefiyat ko pehchanta hun, is liye aao, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke pass chalte hain aur unse poochte hain ki unke bad khilafat kise milegi? Agar hum hi mein hui to hamen iska ilm ho jaye ga aur agar humare alawa kisi aur mein hui to hum Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se baat kar len ge taaki woh humare mutalliq aane wale khalifa ko wasiyat farma den, Sayyidna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne farmaya: Allah ki qasam! Agar humne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se iski darkhwast ki aur Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne hamari darkhwast qubool karne se inkar kar diya to log kabhi bhi hamen khilafat nahin den ge, is liye mein to kabhi bhi unse darkhwast nahin karun ga.
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ يُونُسَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ:" خَرَجَ عَلِيٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَرَضِهِ، فَقَالُوا: كَيْفَ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ؟ فَقَالَ: أَصْبَحَ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ بَارِئًا. فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: أَلَا تَرَى؟! إِنِّي لَأَرَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَيُتَوَفَّى مِنْ وَجَعِهِ، وَإِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ الْمَوْتَ، فَانْطَلِقْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْنُكَلِّمْهُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ الْأَمْرُ فِينَا بَيَّنَهُ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غَيْرِنَا كَلَّمْنَاهُ، وَأَوْصَى بِنَا. فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: إِنْ قَالَ: الْأَمْرُ فِي غَيْرِنَا، فَلَمْ يُعْطِنَاهُ النَّاسُ أَبَدًا، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَا أُكَلِّمُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذَا أَبَدًا".
