The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3219
Yazid bin Asam narrated that once there was a mention of monitor lizard in the presence of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. A man present in the gathering said that it was presented to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but he neither declared it lawful nor unlawful. Upon this, Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "You are wrong. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to determine what is lawful and unlawful." He further said, "Actually, once the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was at the house of Umm al-Mu'minin Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her. Umm Hafidh, may Allah be pleased with her, came to visit her sister Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, and she had brought food with her, which included monitor lizard meat. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came in the evening, it was presented to him. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to eat it, Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is monitor lizard meat.' Hearing this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, withdrew his hand, but those who were present there ate it. If it was unlawful, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have forbidden them. However, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'It is not found in our land, so we abstain from it.'"

یزید بن اصم کہتے کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کے سامنے گوہ کا تذکرہ ہوا تو ان کی مجلس میں شریک ایک آدمی نے کہا کہ نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں اسے پیش کیا گیا تو آپ ﷺ نے اسے حلال قرار دیا اور نہ ہی حرام، اس پر سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہنے لگے کہ تم نے غلط کہا، نبی ﷺ کو تو بھیجا ہی اس لئے گیا تھا کہ حلال و حرام کی تعیین کردیں۔ پھر فرمایا: دراصل نبی ﷺ ایک مرتبہ ام المومنین سیدہ میمونہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے یہاں تھے، وہاں سیدہ ام حفید رضی اللہ عنہا اپنی بہن سیدہ میمونہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے ملاقات کے لئے آئی ہوئی تھیں، ان کے ساتھ کھانا بھی تھا جس میں گوہ کا گوشت تھا، شام کو نبی ﷺ تشریف لائے تو اسے نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں پیش کیا گیا، نبی ﷺ نے جب اسے تناول فرمانے کا ارادہ کیا تو سیدہ میمونہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ ﷺ ! یہ گوہ کا گوشت ہے، یہ سنتے ہی نبی ﷺ نے اپنا ہاتھ روک لیا لیکن وہاں موجود لوگوں نے اسے کھایا، اگر یہ حرام ہوتا تو نبی صلی اللہ انہیں منع فرما دیتے، البتہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا تھا: ”یہ ہمارے علاقے میں نہیں ہوتا اس لئے ہم اس سے بچتے ہیں۔“
Yazid bin Asam kahte hain ke ek martaba Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ke samne ghoh ka tazkara hua to un ki majlis mein sharik ek aadmi ne kaha ke Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein ise pesh kiya gaya to aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ise halal karar diya aur na hi haram, is par Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kahne lage ke tum ne ghalat kaha, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ko to bheja hi is liye gaya tha ke halal o haram ki tayin kar den. Phir farmaya: Dar asal Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ek martaba Umm al-Momineen Sayyida Maymunah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ا) ke yahan the, wahan Sayyida Umm Habibah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ا) apni bahan Sayyida Maymunah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ا) se mulaqat ke liye aayi hui thin, un ke sath khana bhi tha jis mein ghoh ka gosht tha, sham ko Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) tashrif laaye to ise Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein pesh kiya gaya, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne jab ise تناول karne ka irada kiya to Sayyida Maymunah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ا) ne arz kiya: Ya Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)! Yah ghoh ka gosht hai, yah sunte hi Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne apna hath rok liya lekin wahan maujud logon ne ise khaya, agar yah haram hota to Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) unhen mana farma dete, albatta Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya tha: "Yah hamare ilaqe mein nahin hota is liye hum is se bachte hain."
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ بُرْقَانَ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْأَصَمِّ ، سَمِعْتُ مِنْهُ، قَالَ: ذُكِرَ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ الضَّبُّ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: مِنْ جُلَسَائِهِ أُتِيَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يُحِلَّهُ، وَلَمْ يُحَرِّمْهُ. فَقَالَ: بِئْسَ مَا تَقُولُونَ، إِنَّمَا بُعِثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحِلًّا، وَمُحَرِّمًا، جَاءَتْ أُمُّ حُفَيْدٍ بِنْتُ الْحَارِثِ تَزُورُ أُخْتَهَا مَيْمُونَةَ بِنْتَ الْحَارِثِ، وَمَعَهَا طَعَامٌ فِيهِ لَحْمُ ضَبٍّ، فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَمَا اغْتَبَقَ، فَقُرِّبَ إِلَيْهِ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ فِيهِ لَحْمَ ضَبٍّ. فَكَفَّ يَدَهُ، فَأَكَلَهُ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ، وَلَوْ كَانَ حَرَامًا نَهَاهُمْ عَنْهُ، وَقَالَ:" لَيْسَ بِأَرْضِنَا، وَنَحْنُ نَعَافُهُ".
