The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 3385
Akarmah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, while discussing the virtues of his grandfather (meaning the Prophet's companion, Abu Bakr), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "If I were to take a Khalil (close friend) from this Ummah, I would have taken him," referring to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).

عکرمہ رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے دادا کے مسئلے میں گفتگو کرتے ہوئے فرمایا کہ نبی ﷺ نے یہ فرمایا تھا کہ ”اگر میں اس امت میں کسی کو اپنا خلیل بناتا تو انہیں بناتا“، یہ سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ کے متعلق فیصلہ فرمایا تھا۔
Ukrama rehmatullah alaih kehte hain ke aik martaba syedna Ibn Abbas razi Allah anhuma ne dada ke masle mein guftgu karte hue farmaya ke Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ye farmaya tha ke “agar mein is ummat mein kisi ko apna khalil banata to unhen banata”, ye syedna Abubakar Siddique razi Allah anhu ke mutalliq faisla farmaya tha.
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فِي الْجَدِّ: أَمَّا الَّذِي، قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" لَوْ كُنْتُ مُتَّخِذًا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ خَلِيلًا، لَاتَّخَذْتُهُ"، فَإِنَّهُ قَضَاهُ أَبًا، يَعْنِي: أَبَا بَكْرٍ.
