Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 4834
Once, a man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) "In your opinion, is Witr Sunnah?" He replied, "What do you mean by Sunnah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and all the Muslims have prayed Witr." The man said, "I'm not asking about that, I'm asking if Witr is Sunnah?" Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Wait! Does your intellect work? I'm telling you that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed it and so did the Muslims."

ایک مرتبہ ایک شخص نے سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے پوچھا کہ آپ کی رائے میں وتر سنت ہیں؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: سنت کا کیا مطلب؟ نبی ﷺ نے اور تمام مسلمانوں نے وتر پڑھے ہیں، اس نے کہا میں آپ سے یہ نہیں پوچھ رہا، میں تو یہ پوچھ رہا ہوں کہ کیا وتر سنت ہیں؟ سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے فرمایا: رکو! کیا تمہاری عقل کام کرتی ہے؟ میں کہہ تو رہا ہوں کہ نبی کریم ﷺ نے بھی پڑھے ہیں اور مسلمانوں نے بھی۔
aik martaba aik shakhs ne sayyidna ibn umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se poocha keh aap ki rai mein witr sunnat hain? unhon ne farmaya: sunnat ka kya matlab? nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne aur tamam musalmanon ne witr parhe hain, usne kaha mein aap se ye nahin pooch raha, mein to ye pooch raha hoon keh kya witr sunnat hain? sayyidna ibn umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ne farmaya: ruko! kya tumhari aql kaam karti hai? mein keh to raha hoon keh nabi kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne bhi parhe hain aur musalmanon ne bhi.
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ مَوْلًى لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ، قَالَ مُعَاذٌ: كَانَ شُعْبَةُ يَقُولُ: الْقُرِّيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ: رَجُلٌ لِابْنِ عُمَرَ أَرَأَيْتَ الْوِتْرَ، أَسُنَّةٌ هُوَ؟ قَالَ: مَا سُنَّةٌ،" أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَوْتَرَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ"، قَالَ: لَا، أَسُنَّةٌ هُوَ؟! قَالَ: مَهْ أََتَعْقِلُ؟! أَوْتَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَأَوْتَرَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ.
