Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5017
It was narrated from Ibn Umar that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "We are an unlettered nation, we do not know calculation. The month is like this, this and this" - and he pointed with his fingers three times - "and sometimes it is like this, this and this," meaning the full thirty.

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”ہم امی امت ہیں، حساب کتاب نہیں جانتے، بعض اوقات مہینہ اتنا، اتنا اور اتنا ہوتا ہے، تیسری مرتبہ آپ ﷺ نے انگوٹھا بند کر لیا اور بعض اوقات اتنا، اتنا اور اتنا ہوتا ہے یعنی پورے تیس کا۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: “Hum ummi ummat hain, hisab kitab nahi jante, baz auqat mahina itna, itna aur itna hota hai, teesri martaba aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ungotha band kar liya aur baz auqat itna, itna aur itna hota hai yani poore tees ka.”
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، سَمِعْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ يُحَدِّثُ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:" إِنَّا أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيَّةٌ، لَا نَكْتُبُ وَلَا، نَحْسُبُ الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا، وَعَقَدَ الْإِبْهَامَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ، وَالشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا"، يَعْنِي تَمَامَ ثَلَاثِينَ.
