Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5159
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a person came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and inquired about the night prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The night prayer should be offered in sets of two rak'ahs. And when you fear that dawn is approaching, then offer one rak'ah after those two. Whatever you have prayed during the night, this one (rak'ah) will suffice for Witr."

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک شخص نے نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو کر رات کی نماز سے متعلق دریافت کیا نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”رات کی نماز دو دو رکعت پر مشتمل ہوتی ہے اور جب صبح ہو جانے کا اندیشہ ہو تو ان دو کے ساتھ ایک رکعت اور ملا لو، تم نے رات میں جتنی پڑھی ہو گی ان سب کی طرف سے یہ وتر کے لئے کافی ہو جائے گی۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki ek martaba ek shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein hazir ho kar raat ki namaz se mutalliq daryaft kiya Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Raat ki namaz do do rakat par mushtamil hoti hai aur jab subah ho jaane ka andesha ho to in do ke sath ek rakat aur mila lo, tumne raat mein jitni parhi ho gi in sab ki taraf se ye witr ke liye kaafi ho jaye gi."
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ؟ قَالَ:" يُصَلِّي أَحَدُكُمْ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ أَنْ يُصْبِحَ صَلَّى رَكْعَةً تُوتِرُ لَهُ صَلَاتَهُ".
