Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 5537
Narrated by Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about Witr. I and that man were walking at that time. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The night prayer consists of two rak'ahs and Witr is one rak'ah."

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک شخص نے نبی ﷺ سے وتر کے متعلق پوچھا، اس وقت میں اور وہ آدمی چل رہے تھے، نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”رات کی نماز دو دو رکعت پر مشتمل ہوتی ہے اور وتر ایک رکعت پر۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Umar razi Allah anhuma se marvi hai ki ek martaba ek shakhs ne Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se witr ke mutalliq poocha, us waqt mein aur wo aadmi chal rahe the, Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: “Raat ki namaz do do rakat par mushtamil hoti hai aur witr ek rakat par.”
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ ، سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ شَقِيقٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْوَتْرِ؟ قَالَ: فَمَشَيْتُ أَنَا وَذَاكَ الرَّجُلُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، وَالْوَتْرُ رَكْعَةٌ"، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ: لَمْ يَقُلْ:" مِنْ آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ".
