Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 6041
Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "We are an unlettered nation and do not know how to write or calculate. The month is thus, thus and thus," (suiting the action to his words, i.e., indicating by his fingers that the month could be 29 or 30 days). He (the Prophet) did that thrice, and in the third time he gripped his thumb (in his fist).

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا: ہم امی امت ہیں حساب کتاب نہیں جانتے، بعض اوقات مہینہ اتنا، اتنا اور اتنا ہوتا ہے، تیسری مرتبہ آپ ﷺ نے انگوٹھابند کر لیا۔
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Hum ummi ummat hain hisab kitab nahin jaante, baz auqat mahina itna, itna aur itna hota hai, teesri martaba aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne ungootha band kar liya.
حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" نَحْنُ أُمَّةٌ أُمِّيُّونَ، لَا نَحْسُبُ وَلَا نَكْتُبُ، الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا" , وَقَبَضَ إِبْهَامَهُ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ.
