Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 690
Our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me: “When two parties come to you, do not listen to the story of just one, but listen to the stories of both. You will then see how you give the judgment.” Our master Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says that after that I remained continuously appointed to the position of judge.

سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ نبی ﷺ نے مجھ سے ارشاد فرمایا: ”جب تمہارے پاس دو فریق آئیں تو صرف کسی ایک کی بات نہ سننا بلکہ دونوں کی بات سننا تم دیکھو گے کہ تم کس طرح فیصلہ کرتے ہو“، سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ اس کے بعد میں مسلسل عہدہ قضاء پر فائز رہا۔
Sayyidna Ali raza Allahu anhu farmate hain ki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne mujh se irshad farmaya: “Jab tumhare pass do fareeq aaen to sirf kisi ek ki baat na sunna balki donon ki baat sunna tum dekhoge ki tum kis tarah faisla karte ho”, Sayyidna Ali raza Allahu anhu farmate hain ki is ke baad main musalsal uhda qaza par faez raha.
حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ حَنَشٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: قَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" إِذَا تَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْكَ خَصْمَانِ، فَلَا تَسْمَعْ كَلَامَ الْأَوَّلِ، حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ كَلَامَ الْآخَرِ، فَسَوْفَ تَرَى كَيْفَ تَقْضِي"، قَالَ: فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: فَمَا زِلْتُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ قَاضِيًا.
