Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 8985
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, what is backbiting?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Backbiting is to mention your brother in a way that he would dislike." Someone asked, "What if my brother possesses the flaw that I mention in his absence?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "If he possesses the flaw that you mentioned, then you have backbitten him. And if he does not possess the flaw that you mentioned, then you have slandered him."

حضرت ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ نبی کریم ﷺ سے صحابہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے دریافت کیا کہ یا رسول اللہ ﷺ غیبت کیا ہے؟ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا غیبت یہ ہے کہ تم اپنے بھائی کا ذکر ایک ایسے عیب کے ساتھ کرو جو اس کو ناپسند ہو کسی نے پوچھا کہ یہ بتایئے اگر میرے بھائی میں وہ عیب موجود ہو جو اس کی غیر موجودگی میں بیان کروں تو کیا حکم ہے؟ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا اگر تمہارا بیان کیا ہوا عیب اس میں موجود ہو تو تم نے اس کی غیبت کی اور اگر تمہارا بیان کیا ہوا عیب اس میں موجود نہ ہو تو تم نے اس پر بہتان باندھا۔
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se marvi hai ki Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se sahaba (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne daryaft kiya ki Ya Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ghaibat kya hai Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya ghaibat ye hai ki tum apne bhai ka zikar ek aise aib ke sath karo jo usko napasand ho kisi ne poocha ki ye bataiye agar mere bhai mein wo aib mojood ho jo uski ghair maujoodgi mein bayan karoon to kya hukum hai Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya agar tumhara bayan kiya hua aib us mein mojood ho to tumne uski ghaibat ki aur agar tumhara bayan kiya hua aib us mein mojood na ho to tumne us par bohtan bandha.
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قِيلَ لَهُ: مَا الْغِيبَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: " ذِكْرُكَ أَخَاكَ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ"، قَالَ: أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِي مَا أَقُولُ، أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ:" إِنْ كَانَ فِي أَخِيكَ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدْ اغْتَبْتَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَدْ بَهَتَّهُ" .
