Chapter: Can the dead body be taken out of its grave

باب هَلْ يُخْرَجُ الْمَيِّتُ مِنَ الْقَبْرِ وَاللَّحْدِ لِعِلَّةٍ

Sahih al-Bukhari 1350

Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) came to `Abdullah bin Ubai (a hypocrite) after his death and he has been laid in his grave. He ordered (that he be taken out of the grave) and he was taken out. Then he placed him on his knees and threw some of his saliva on him and clothed him in his (the Prophet's ﷺ) own shirt. Allah knows better (why he did so). Abdullah bin Ubai had given his shirt to Al-Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) to wear. Abu Harun (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said, ‘Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) at that time had two shirts and the son of Abdullah bin Ubai said to him, 'O Allah's Apostle ( صلى ہللا عليه و آلهوسلم)! Clothe my father in your shirt which has been in contact with your skin.' Sufyan added, ‘thus people think that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) clothed Abdullah bin Tubal in his shirt in lieu of what he (Abdullah) had done (for Al Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه), the Prophet's ﷺ uncle.)’

حضرت جابر بن عبداللہ ؓ  سے روایت ہے،انھوں نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ ﷺ رئیس المنافقین عبد اللہ بن ابی کے پاس آئے جبکہ اسے قبر میں داخل کردیا گیا تھا۔ آپ نے اسے نکالنے کا حکم دیا۔ چنانچہ اسے باہر نکالا گیا۔ آپ نے اسے اپنے گھٹنوں پررکھ لیا اور اس کے منہ میں اپنا لعاب مبارک ڈالا، نیز اسے اپنی قمیص پہنائی۔ ویسے تو اس کی وجہ اللہ ہی بہتر جانتا ہے، البتہ اس نے حضرت عباس ؓ  کو اپنی قمیص پہنائی تھی۔ ابو ہارون کا بیان ہے کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ کے بدن پر دوقمیصیں تھیں اور عبد اللہ بن عبد اللہ بن ابی ؓ  نے عرض کیا:اللہ کے رسول اللہ ﷺ !میرے باپ کو نیچے والی قمیص پہنائیں جو آپ کے بدن سے لگ چکی ہے۔ سفیان نےکہا:لوگوں کے خیال کے مطابق نبی ﷺ نے رئیس المنافقین عبد اللہ کو قمیص بدلہ چکانے کے لیے پہنائی تھی، کیونکہ اس نے حضرت عباس ؓ کو پہنائی تھی۔

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai, unhon ne farmaya: Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) Raees-ul-Munafiqeen Abdullah bin Ubayy ke pas aye jabke ise qabr mein dakhil kar diya gaya tha. Aap ne ise nikalne ka hukm diya. Chunancha ise bahar nikala gaya. Aap ne ise apne ghutnon par rakh liya aur is ke munh mein apna luaab-e-mubarak dala, neez ise apni qameez pehnayi. Waise to is ki wajah Allah hi behtar jaanta hai, albatta us ne Hazrat Abbas (Radhi Allahu Anhu) ko apni qameez pehnayi thi. Abu Haroon ka bayan hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke badan par do qameezein thein aur Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Ubayy (Radhi Allahu Anhu) ne arz kiya: Allah ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)! mere baap ko neeche wali qameez pehnayein jo Aap ke badan se lag chuki hai. Sufyan ne kaha: logon ke khayal ke mutaliq Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne Raees-ul-Munafiqeen Abdullah ko qameez badla chukane ke liye pehnayi thi, kyunke us ne Hazrat Abbas (Radhi Allahu Anhu) ko pehnayi thi.

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ عَمْرٌو سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا , قَالَ : أَتَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ بَعْدَ مَا أُدْخِلَ حُفْرَتَهُ ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَأُخْرِجَ ، فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ ، وَنَفَثَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ رِيقِهِ ، وَأَلْبَسَهُ قَمِيصَهُ ، فَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ , وَكَانَ كَسَا عَبَّاسًا قَمِيصًا ، قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : وَقَالَ أَبُو هَارُونَ : وَكَانَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَمِيصَانِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلْبِسْ أَبِي قَمِيصَكَ الَّذِي يَلِي جِلْدَكَ ؟ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : فَيُرَوْنَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلْبَسَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ قَمِيصَهُ مُكَافَأَةً لِمَا صَنَعَ .

Sahih al-Bukhari 1351

Jabir (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that when the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, ‘I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely).’ So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr), so I took him out of the grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear.

حضرت جابر ؓ  سے روایت ہے، انھوں نے فرمایا: جب اُحد کا واقعہ پیش آیا تو میرے والد گرامی حضرت عبد اللہ ؓ  نے مجھے اس رات بلایا اور فرمایا کہ میرے گمان کے مطابق نبی ﷺ کے صحابہ کرام ؓ  میں سے جو شہید ہوں گے۔ ان میں پہلا مقتول میں خود ہوں گا اور میں رسول اللہ ﷺ کی ذات کریمہ کے سوا اپنے بعد کسی کو تجھ سے زیادہ عزیز نہیں چھوڑرہا ہوں۔ مجھ پر قرض ہے۔ اسے ادا کردینا اور اپنی بہنوں سے اچھا برتاؤ کرنا۔ صبح ہوئی تو سب سے پہلے شہید ہونے والے وہی تھے، چنانچہ ان کے ساتھ قبر میں ایک دوسرے شہید کو بھی دفن کردیا گیا، لیکن میرے دل کو یہ بات اچھی نہ لگی کہ میں اپنے والد گرامی کو دوسرے شخص کے ساتھ چھوڑدوں، اس لیے میں نے چھ ماہ بعد انھیں قبر سے نکال لیا۔ وہ اسی طرح تھے جس طرح میں نے انھیں دفن کیا تھا، صرف کان کا تھوڑا سا حصہ متاثرہوا تھا ۔

Hazrat Jabir (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai, unhon ne farmaya: Jab Uhud ka waqiya pesh aya to mere walid-e-girami Hazrat Abdullah (Radhi Allahu Anhu) ne mujhe us raat bulaya aur farmaya ke mere guman ke mutaliq Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke sahaba-e-karam (Radhi Allahu Anhum) mein se jo shaheed honge, un mein pehla maqtool main khud hoonga aur main Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ki zaat-e-kareema ke siwa apne baad kisi ko tujh se zyada azeez nahi chhor raha hoon. Mujh par qarz hai, ise ada kar dena aur apni behnon se achha bartao karna. Subah hui to sab se pehle shaheed hone wale wahi the, chunancha un ke sath qabr mein ek doosre shaheed ko bhi dafan kar diya gaya, lekin mere dil ko yeh baat achhi na lagi ke main apne walid-e-girami ko doosre shakhs ke sath chhor doon, is liye main ne chhay mah baad unhein qabr se nikal liya. Woh isi tarah the jis tarah main ne unhein dafan kiya tha, sirf kaan ka thora sa hissa mutaasir hua tha.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، أَخْبَرَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , قَالَ : لَمَّا حَضَرَ أُحُدٌ دَعَانِي أَبِي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ , فَقَالَ : مَا أُرَانِي إِلَّا مَقْتُولًا فِي أَوَّلِ مَنْ يُقْتَلُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَإِنِّي لَا أَتْرُكُ بَعْدِي أَعَزَّ عَلَيَّ مِنْكَ غَيْرَ نَفْسِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَإِنَّ عَلَيَّ دَيْنًا فَاقْضِ , وَاسْتَوْصِ بِأَخَوَاتِكَ خَيْرًا , فَأَصْبَحْنَا فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ قَتِيلٍ , وَدُفِنَ مَعَهُ آخَرُ فِي قَبْرٍ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ تَطِبْ نَفْسِي أَنْ أَتْرُكَهُ مَعَ الْآخَرِ فَاسْتَخْرَجْتُهُ بَعْدَ سِتَّةِ أَشْهُرٍ ، فَإِذَا هُوَ كَيَوْمِ وَضَعْتُهُ هُنَيَّةً غَيْرَ أُذُنِهِ .

Sahih al-Bukhari 1352

Jabir (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that a man was buried along with my father and I did not like it till I took him (my father) out and buried him in a separate grave.

حضرت جابر ؓ  ہی سے روایت ہے، انھوں نے فرمایا:میرے والد گرامی کے ہمراہ ایک اور شہید بھی دفن کیا گیا تھا، لیکن میری طبیعت کو یہ پسندنہ آیا، اس لیے میں نے انھیں نکالا اور علیحدہ قبر میں دفن کردیا۔

Hazrat Jabir (Radhi Allahu Anhu) hi se riwayat hai, unhon ne farmaya: Mere walid-e-girami ke hamrah ek aur shaheed bhi dafan kiya gaya tha, lekin meri tabiyat ko yeh pasand na aya, is liye main ne unhein nikala aur alaihda qabr mein dafan kar diya.

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , قَالَ : دُفِنَ مَعَ أَبِي رَجُلٌ ، فَلَمْ تَطِبْ نَفْسِي حَتَّى أَخْرَجْتُهُ ، فَجَعَلْتُهُ فِي قَبْرٍ عَلَى حِدَةٍ .
