بَابُ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ ثُمَّ أَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ إِلَى اللَّيْلِ}

Sahih al-Bukhari 1916
Narrated `Adi bin Hatim: When the above verses were revealed: 'Until the white thread appears to you, distinct from the black thread,' I took two (hair) strings, one black and the other white, and kept them under my pillow and went on looking at them throughout the night but could not make anything out of it. So, the next morning I went to Allah's Apostle and told him the whole story. He explained to me, That verse means the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the dawn.
حضرت عدی بن حاتم ؓ سے روایت ہے انھوں نے فرمایا کہ جب یہ آیت نازل ہوئی: ﴿حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ﴾ ’’(کھاؤ اور پیو) یہاں تک کہ تمہارے لیے سفید دھاگا، سیاہ دھاگے سے نمایاں ہوجائے۔ ‘‘ تو میں نے ایک سیاہ اور ایک سفید رسی لی، پھر ان دونوں کو اپنے تکیے کے نیچے رکھ لیا اور رات کو اٹھ کر ان کو دیکھتا رہا۔ لیکن مجھے کچھ معلوم نہ ہوسکا۔ چنانچہ میں صبح کے وقت رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس گیا اور آپ سے اس کا ذکر کیا تو آپ نے فرمایا: ’’سیاہ دھاگا شب کی سیاہی اور سفید دھاگا صبح کی سفیدی ہے۔ ‘‘
Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (Radi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai unhon ne farmaya ke jab ye ayat nazil hui: 'Hatta yatabayyana lakum' "(Khao aur piyo) yahan tak ke tumhare liye sufaid dhaga, siyah dhage se numayan ho jaye." To main ne ek siyah aur ek sufaid rassi li, phir in dono ko apne takiye ke neeche rakh liya aur raat ko uth kar in ko dekhta raha. Lekin mujhe kuch maloom na ho saka. Chunanche main subha ke waqt Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ke paas gaya aur aap se is ka zikr kiya to aap ne farmaya: "Siyah dhaga shab ki siyahi aur sufaid dhaga subha ki sufaidi hai."
حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي حُصَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ : حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ سورة البقرة آية 187 ، عَمَدْتُ إِلَى عِقَالٍ أَسْوَدَ وَإِلَى عِقَالٍ أَبْيَضَ ، فَجَعَلْتُهُمَا تَحْتَ وِسَادَتِي ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ فِي اللَّيْلِ فَلَا يَسْتَبِينُ لِي ، فَغَدَوْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ سَوَادُ اللَّيْلِ وَبَيَاضُ النَّهَارِ .
