“O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you that you, may become Al- Muttaqun (V.2:183).

Sahih al-Bukhari 4501
Ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that fasting was observed on the day of ‘Ashura’ (10th of Muharram) by the people of the Pre-lslamic Period. But when (the order of fasting) in the month of Ramadan was revealed, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, ‘it is up to one to fast on it (Day of Ashura) or not.’
حضرت ابن عمر ؓ سے روایت ہے، انہوں نے فرمایا کہ اہل جاہلیت عاشوراء کا روزہ رکھتے تھے۔ جب رمضان کی فرضیت نازل ہوئی تو آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ’’جو چاہے عاشوراء کا روزہ رکھے اور جو چاہے نہ رکھے۔‘‘
Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai, unhon ne farmaya ke ahl-e-jahiliyat Ashura ka roza rakhte the. Jab Ramazan ki farziyat nazil hui to Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: ''Jo chahe Ashura ka roza rakkhe aur jo chahe na rakkhe.''"
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ , حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى , عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ , عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا , قَالَ : كَانَ عَاشُورَاءُ يَصُومُهُ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ , قَالَ : مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَهُ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يَصُمْهُ .
