"...And eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of the night).. ." (V.2:187)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4510
Adi bin Hatim (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that he said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), what is the meaning of the white thread distinct from the black thread? Are these two threads?’ He said, ‘you are not intelligent if you watch the two threads.’ He then added, ‘no, it is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.’
حضرت عدی بن حاتم ؓ ہی سے روایت ہے، وہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے عرض کی: اللہ کے رسول! سفید دگاھا سیاہ دھاگے سے جدا ہو اس کا کیا مطلب ہے؟ کیا اس سے حقیقت کے اعتبار سے دو دھاگے مراد ہیں؟ آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ’’اگر تو نے ان دو دھاگوں کو (اپنے تکیے کے نیچے) دیکھا تو پھر تمہاری گدی بہت لمبی چوڑی ہو گی۔‘‘ پھر فرمایا: ’’ان سے مراد رات کی تاریکی اور صبح کی سفیدی ہے۔‘‘
Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (Radi Allahu Anhu) hi se riwayat hai, woh kehte hain: Main ne arz ki: Allah ke Rasul! safaid dhaga siyah dhage se juda ho is ka kya matlab hai? Kya is se haqiqat ke aitbar se do dhage murad hain? Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: ''Agar tu ne in do dhagon ko (apne takiye ke neeche) dekha to phir tumhari gaddi bahut lambi chaury ho gi.'' Phir farmaya: ''In se murad raat ki tariki aur subah ki safaidi hai.''"
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ , حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ , عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ , عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , مَا الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ أَهُمَا الْخَيْطَانِ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّكَ لَعَرِيضُ الْقَفَا إِنْ أَبْصَرْتَ الْخَيْطَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا ، بَلْ هُوَ سَوَادُ اللَّيْلِ وَبَيَاضُ النَّهَارِ .
