Dhaak ibn Musa narrated that when Sulaiman ibn Abdul Malik was going to Makkah, he passed by Madinah and stayed there for a few days. He asked, "Did anyone find any of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in Madinah?" The people said, "Abu Hazim." So he summoned him. When he entered upon him, Sulaiman said, "Abu Hazim, what is this indifference?" Abu Hazim said, "O Commander of the Believers! What indifference did you find in me?" He said, "Many people of Madinah came to me, but you did not come." He said, "O Commander of the Believers! I seek refuge with Allah from what has not happened. You did not recognize me before today, nor did I see you." The narrator said: Sulaiman turned to Muhammad ibn Shihab al-Zuhri and said, "The Shaykh is right, I was wrong." Then Caliph Sulaiman asked, "Abu Hazim, what is the matter, why do we dislike death?" He replied, "Because you have ruined the Hereafter, and the world is but a temporary abode. Therefore, you dislike going from a populated place to a desolate one." He said, "Abu Hazim! You have spoken the truth. But how will it be tomorrow when we stand before Allah Almighty?" He replied, "The one who does good is like an absent person who comes to his family, while the one who does evil is like a runaway slave who comes to his master." Upon hearing this, Amir al-Mu'minin Sulaiman ibn Abdul Malik began to cry and said, "We do not know what is in store for us with Allah." Abu Hazim said, "Compare your deeds with the Book of Allah." Sulaiman said, "Where in the Quran can I find this?" Abu Hazim said: "Indeed, the righteous will be in Paradise, and the wicked will be in Hellfire." [Al-Infitar: 13-14] Sulaiman said, "Then where is the mercy of Allah Almighty?" Abu Hazim replied, "The mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good." [Al-A'raf: 56] Caliph Sulaiman said, "Abu Hazim! Which servants of Allah are the most honored and respected?" He replied, "Those with good character and deeds." He said, "O Abu Hazim! Which deeds are the best?" He replied, "Performing the obligatory duties and abstaining from forbidden acts." He asked, "Which prayer is most likely to be answered?" He replied, "The prayer of a grateful person for his benefactor." He said, "And what is the best charity?" He replied, "That which is given to a hungry beggar, and which a poor person gives from his hard-earned money, and in which there is kindness and no harm." Sulaiman: "Then what is the most just speech?" He replied, "Speaking the truth before the one whom you fear and hope from." Sulaiman: "And who is the most intelligent among the believers?" Abu Hazim: "The one who obeys Allah and guides the people towards Him." Sulaiman: "And who is the most foolish among the believers?" He replied, "The one who gets involved in the evil desires of his brother, and that brother is a tyrant in his desires." Sulaiman said, "You have spoken the truth. What do you say about us?" He replied, "O Commander of the Believers! Will you excuse me from this?" He said, "No, just advise me." He said, "O Commander of the Believers! Your forefathers subdued people by the sword, and this kingdom was acquired by force without the consultation and consent of the Muslims. They killed countless people, and they all left us. I wish you knew what they did, and what people said about them." One of Sulaiman's companions said, "Abu Hazim! How terrible is what you have said!" Abu Hazim said, "You lie. Allah has taken a covenant from the scholars that they will convey to the people and not conceal." Caliph Sulaiman said to him, "How can we rectify this?" He replied, "When you abandon pride and arrogance, adopt good character, and act justly." Sulaiman said, "How can we take it?" Abu Hazim said, "When you take it through lawful means and give it to those who are entitled to it." Sulaiman: "Abu Hazim! Is it possible for you to be our companion, so that we may benefit from you, and you may benefit from us?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from that." Sulaiman: "Why is that?" He replied, "I fear that if I incline even slightly towards you, Allah Almighty will make me taste double the punishment for it in this world and the Hereafter." Sulaiman: "Tell us your needs and necessities." He replied, "Grant me salvation from Hellfire and admit me into Paradise." He said, "This is not in my power." Abu Hazim said, "Apart from that, I have no need from you." He said, "Then pray for me." Abu Hazim prayed, "O Allah! If Sulaiman is Your friend, then make the good of this world and the Hereafter easy for him. And if he is Your enemy, then turn his forehead towards Your love and pleasure." Sulaiman: "Enough." Abu Hazim: "I have spoken briefly and in some detail. Perhaps you are worthy of it. And if you are not worthy of it, then there is no benefit in me shooting an arrow from a bow that has no string." Sulaiman: "Advise me." He replied, "I will give you brief advice. Fear your Lord and protect yourself from Him seeing you where He has forbidden you to look, or finding you missing from where He has commanded you to be." When Abu Hazim departed from the Caliph, the Caliph sent him one hundred dinars and wrote, "Spend this, for I have much more like it for you." The narrator said: Abu Hazim returned the dinars and wrote back, "O Commander of the Believers! I seek refuge in Allah from your questions to me being nonsense, or my answers to you being useless. And how can I like for myself what I do not like for you?" He further wrote to him, "When Musa ibn Imran, peace be upon him, reached the well of Madyan, he found shepherds watering their flocks, and he saw two girls standing apart, keeping their sheep back. So he asked them about the matter. The girls replied, 'We do not water our sheep until these shepherds have driven away their flocks, and our father is a very old man.' So he himself watered their flocks for them. Then he withdrew to the shade and said, 'My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You may send down to me.' [Al-Qasas: 24] And this was because he was hungry, afraid, and insecure (in that state), yet he asked from his Lord and not from the people. The shepherds did not understand, but the girls understood. And when they came to their father, they told him the story and about his prayer. Their father, who was Shu'ayb, said, 'This man seems to be hungry.' And he said to one of his daughters, 'Go and invite him.' So when the girl came to him, she greeted him with respect, covered her face, and said, 'My father invites you that he may reward you for your having watered our flocks.' [Al-Qasas: 25] It was difficult for Musa, peace be upon him, to take a reward for his deed, but he had no choice but to accept the invitation, for he was afraid and hungry in the mountains. So he began to walk behind the girl. When the wind blew, she would gather her clothes around her waist, revealing her legs. She was indeed a woman with beautiful legs, and Musa, peace be upon him, was in such a state that he would sometimes turn his face away and sometimes close his eyes. When his patience reached its limit, he said, 'O maidservant of Allah! Walk ahead of me and guide me with your voice.' Then, when they reached Shu'ayb, peace be upon him, he saw that he had prepared food. Shu'ayb said, 'Sit down, O young man! And eat.' Musa, peace be upon him, sought refuge in Allah. Shu'ayb said, 'Why, are you not hungry?' He replied, 'I am hungry, but I fear that this may be a reward for my deed, and I belong to a family that does not sell its religion even for gold equal to the weight of the earth.' Shu'ayb said, 'No, O young man! This is not a reward, but it is the custom of me and my forefathers that we offer hospitality and feed our guests.' So Musa, peace be upon him, sat down and ate. Therefore, if these one hundred dinars were in exchange for my speech, then carrion, blood, and pork are more permissible than that in times of necessity. And if it is my due from the public treasury, then there are others like me. I wish you would treat us equally. Otherwise, I have no need for these dinars."
Zahak bin Musa ne bayan kya keh Sulaiman bin Abdul Malik Makkah jate huye Madina se guzre toh wahan kuchh din qayam kya, poochha: kya Madina mein kisi ne Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke Sahaba mein se kisi ko paya? Logon ne kaha: Abu Hazim ne, chunancha unko bulaya aur jab woh unke paas dakhil huye toh Sulaiman ne kaha: Abu Hazim yeh kya be-rakhi hai? Abu Hazim ne arz kya: Amir-ul-Momineen! Kaisi be-rakhi aapne mujhse mehsoos ki? Kaha: Ahl-e-Madina ke bahut se log mere paas aaye, lekin tum nahin aaye? Arz kya: Amir-ul-Momineen! Main aapko Allah ki panaah mein deta hun iss cheez se jo sarzad nahin hui, aap ne aaj se pehle mujhe pehchana nahin, aur na maine aapko dekha. Ravi ne kaha: Sulaiman, Muhammad bin Shahab Zuhri ki taraf mutawajjeh huye aur farmaya: Sheikh sahih farmate hain, maine hi galat kaha, phir Khalifa Sulaiman ne دریافت kya: Abu Hazim kya baat hai, hum maut ko napasand karte hain? Arz kya: Iss liye ke aapne aakhirat ko barbaad kar liya aur duniya basa li hai, iss liye aabadi se verani ki taraf jaana napasand karte ho, farmaya: Abu Hazim! Tumne sach kaha, lekin kal ko Allah Ta'ala ke samne hazari kaise hogi? Arz kya: neki karne wala uss ghaib ki tarah hai jo apne ahl ke paas aata hai, lekin burai karne wala uss bhagodey ghulam ki tarah jo apne aaqa ke paas aata hai. Yeh sunkar Amir-ul-Momineen Sulaiman bin Abdul Malik rone lage aur kaha: pata nahin Allah ke paas humare liye kya hai? Abu Hazim ne kaha: apne amal ka Kitab Allah se muwazzana kijiye. Sulaiman ne kaha: Quran mein kahan iss cheez ko dekhon? Abu Hazim ne kaha: "Beshak achhe nek log jannat mein honge aur fussaq wa fajar jahannam mein honge." [Al-Infitar 13/82-14] Sulaiman ne kaha: phir Allah Ta'ala ki rehmat kahan hai? Abu Hazim ne jawab diya. «﴿رَحْمَةَ اللهِ قَرِيْبٌ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ﴾» "Allah ki rehmat muhsinin ke qareeb hai." Khalifa Sulaiman ne kaha: Abu Hazim! Allah ke kaun se bande sabse zyada mu'azziz wa mukarram hain. Arz kya: akhlaq wa amal wale. Kaha: Aye Abu Hazim! Kaun se amaal sabse behtar hain? Arz kya: faraiz ki adaaigi aur haram kaamon se ijtinaab. Poochha: kaun si dua sabse zyada qubool hoti hai? Arz kya: muhsin ilaihi ki dua (apne muhsin ke liye). Kaha: aur sabse zyada achha kaun sa sadqah hai? Arz kya: jo sadqah bhookhe sawali ke liye aur kam maal wala mehnat kar ke sadqah kare aur jiss mein ehsaan jatana aur ezaa rasani na ho. Sulaiman: toh sabse insaaf wala qaul kya hai? Arz kya: jisse darte aur umeed rakhte ho uske samne sachi baat. Sulaiman: aur Imaan walon mein sabse zyada samajhdaar kaun hai? Abu Hazim: woh aadmi jo Allah ki ita'at guzaari kare aur usi ki taraf logon ki rahnumai kare, Sulaiman: aur ahl-e-imaan mein sabse zyada be-waqoof kaun hai? Jawab: woh aadmi jo apne bhai ki galat khwahish mein maloos ho aur woh bhai apni iss khwahish mein zaalim ho. Sulaiman ne kaha: aapne sach kaha, humare baare mein kya kehte hain? Arz kya: Amir-ul-Momineen! Kya aap mujhe iss se maaf farmaenge? Kaha: nahin, bas mujhe nasihat kar do. Arz kya: Aye Amir-ul-Momineen! Aapke aba ne logon ko talwar ke zariye se zeer kya, aur yeh badshahat bina musalmanon ke mashware wa razaamandi ke zabardasti hasil ki. Yahan tak ke be-shumaar qatl kiye aur woh sab humein chhod kar chale gaye, kash aap samjhein ke unhon ne kya kya, aur logon ne unke baare mein kya kaha? Sulaiman ke musahibin mein se kisi ne kaha: Abu Hazim! Tumne kitni buri baat kahi hai? Abu Hazim ne kaha: tumne jhoot bola, Allah ne ulama se ahd liya hai ke logon ke liye bayan kar dein aur chhupayen nahin. Khalifa Sulaiman ne unse kaha: hum kis tarah iss ki islaah kar sakte hain? Arz kya: jab tum gharoor-o-ghurur chhod doge, akhlaq ko apnaoge, aur insaaf se kaam loge. Sulaiman ne kaha: hum iss ko kis tarah le sakte hain? Abu Hazim ne kaha: jab iss ko halal tareeqe se loge aur jo uske ahl hain unhein doge. Sulaiman: Abu Hazim! Kya yeh mumkin hai ke aap humare musahib rahen, humein aapse faida pahunche, aur aap humse mustafid hon, kaha: main (iss se) Allah ki panaah chahta hun. Sulaiman: aisa kyon? Arz kya: mujhe dar hai ke agar thoda sa aap ki taraf jhukhao ikhtiyar kya toh Allah Ta'ala uske badle duniya-o-aakhirat mein double azab ka maza chakhaye. Sulaiman: apni hajat wa zarooriyaat pesh kijiye. Arz kya: aap mujhe jahannam se nijaat dila dijiye aur jannat mein dakhil kara dijiye. Farmaya: yeh toh mere bas mein nahin hai, Abu Hazim ne kaha: uske alawa aapse mujhe koi hajat nahin. Farmaya: phir mere liye dua kar dijiye. Abu Hazim dua go huye. Aye Allah! Agar Sulaiman tere wali hain toh duniya-o-aakhirat ki bhalai unke liye aasaan kar de, aur agar woh tera dushman hai toh uski peshani apni muhabbat-o-razaamandi ki taraf phir le. Sulaiman: kaafi hai. Abu Hazim: maine ikhtisaar aur kuchh tafseel se guftgu ki hai. Shayad tum uske ahl ho aur agar uske ahl nahin toh mujhe aisi kaman se teer phenkne se koi faida nahin hoga jiss mein taant na ho. Sulaiman: mujhe vasiyat kijiye. Arz kya: main aapko mukhtasir vasiyat karunga. Apne Rab ki ta'zeem kijiye, aur uss se apne aap ko bachhaiye ke aapko woh wahan dekhe, jahan dekhne se aapko mana kya hai, ya wahan gum paaye jahan maujood rehne ka aapko hukm diya hai. Jab Abu Hazim khalifa ke paas se chale gaye toh khalifa ne sau dinar unke liye bheje aur likha ke yeh kharch kijiye, aur aapke liye uske misl mere paas bahut kuchh hai. Ravi ne kaha: Abu Hazim ne woh dinar wapas kar diye aur likh bheja: Aye Amir-ul-Momineen! Main aapko Allah ki panaah mein deta hun, uss cheez se ke aapke mujhse sawalat bakwaas hon, ya aapke liye mere jawabat bekaar hon, aur jo cheez mujhe aapke liye pasand nahin apne liye use kaise pasand kar sakta hun. Unke liye mazeed likha ke Musa bin Imran Alaihissalam jab Madyan ke kuen ke paas pahunche toh charwahon ko pani pilate paya aur wahin do ladkiyon ko alag khade apni bakriyon ko rokte dekha, toh unse majra poochha, ladkiyon ne jawab diya: jab tak yeh charwahe wapas na laut jayen, hum pani nahin pilate. Aur humare walid badi umr ke buddhe hain, pas unhon ne khud un janwaron ko pani pila diya. Phir saye ki taraf hat aaye aur kehne lage: aye Parwardigaar! Tu ne jo kuchh bhalai meri taraf utaari hai, main uss ka muhtaaj hun. [Al-Qasas: 23/28-24] Aur yeh iss liye ke woh bhookhe aur dare huye ghair mahfooz the (iss haal mein bhi) apne Rab se manga, logon se nahin manga, woh charwahe kuchh na samjhe, ladkiyan samjhi gayin aur jab apne baap ke paas aayin toh yeh qissa aur unki dua sunaai, unke walid jo Shoaib (Alaihissalam) unhon ne kaha: yeh aadmi bhooka lagta hai, aur un mein se ek ladki se kaha: jao isse bula lao, pas jab woh ladki unke paas aayi toh ta'zeem baja laayi, apne chehre ko chhupaya aur arz kya: mere walid aapko bula rahe hain taake aapne humare janwaron ko jo pani pilaya hai uss ki ujrat dein [Al-Qasas 25/28], Musa Alaihissalam par yeh shaq guzra ke apne amal ki ujrat len, lekin labbaik kehne ke siwa chaara na tha, kyonki dare sahme bhookhe pyase paharon mein the. Lihaza uss ladki ke peechhe chalne lage, jab hawa chalti toh woh apne kapdon ko apni kamar par kass leti jisse uske kulhe zahir ho jate, woh kulhe wali toh thi hi aur Musa Alaihissalam ki yeh haalat thi ke kabhi munh phir lete aur kabhi aankh band kar lete, jab paimana sabar labrez ho gaya toh kaha: aye Allah ki bandi! Mere peechhe ho ja aur apni aawaz se raasta batati ja, phir jab Shoaib Alaihissalam ke paas pahunche toh dekha ke woh khane ka intezaam kiye huye hain, Shoaib Alaihissalam ne kaha: baitho aye naujawan! Aur khana تناول karo, Musa Alaihissalam ne A'udhu billah padha, Shoaib Alaihissalam ne kaha: kyon kya tum bhookhe nahin ho? Arz kya: ji bhooka toh hun, lekin darta hun ke yeh mere amal ka badla na ho aur main aise gharane ka fard hun ke hum apne deen ko zameen ke barabar sone ke badle bhi nahin bechte. Shoaib Alaihissalam ne kaha: nahin aye naujawan! Yeh ujrat nahin balki meri aur mere aba-o-ajdad ki aadat hai ke hum mehmaan nawazi karte, khana khilate hain. Lihaza Musa Alaihissalam baithe aur khana kha liya. So yeh sau dinar agar mere bayan ka badal the toh murdaar khoon aur khazira iztirari haalat mein uss se zyada halal hain aur agar baitul maal se mera haq hain toh mujh jaise doosre bhi hain, kash aap humare darmiyaan musawat bartein, warna un dinaron ki mujhe koi hajat nahin.
