Chapter on dry ablution (tayammum)

Sunan al-Darimi 766

Narrated by Imran bin Husain (May Allah be pleased with him): We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He (ﷺ) dismounted and performed ablution, then the Adhan (call to prayer) was pronounced and he (ﷺ) led the prayer. After finishing the prayer with Taslim (greetings of peace at the end of the prayer), he (ﷺ) turned around and saw a man standing alone who had not prayed with them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked him, "What prevented you from praying with us?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah! I became sexually impure, and there was no water." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Perform Tayammum with clean earth, for it is sufficient for you."

سیدنا عمران بن حصین رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: ہم رسول اللہ ﷺ کے ساتھ ایک سفر میں تھے۔ آپ ﷺ نے پڑاؤ ڈالا، وضو کا پانی منگایا اور وضو کیا، پھر اذان دی گئی اور آپ ﷺ نے نماز پڑھائی، اور سلام پھیر کر مڑے تو دیکھا ایک آدمی الگ تھلگ کھڑا ہے، نماز بھی نہیں پڑھی۔ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے اس سے کہا: ”تم نے جماعت کے ساتھ نماز کیوں نہیں پڑھی؟“ اس نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! مجھے جنابت ہو گئی اور پانی ہے نہیں، رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”مٹی سے کام نکالو یہی تمہارے لئے کافی ہے۔“

Sayyidina Imran bin Husain (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kaha: hum Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke sath ek safar mein thay. Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne padav dala, wazu ka pani mangwaya aur wazu kiya, phir azan di gayi aur Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne namaz parhayi, aur salam pher kar mude to dekha ek aadmi alag thalag khda hai, namaz bhi nahi parhayi. Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne us se kaha: "Tum ne jamaat ke sath namaz kyon nahi parhayi?" Us ne arz kiya: Ya Rasool Allah! mujhe janabat ho gayi aur pani hai nahi, Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Mitti se kaam nikalo yahi tumhare liye kafi hai."

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَوْفٌ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو رَجَاءٍ الْعُطَارِدِيُّ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ، ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَدَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ، ثُمَّ نُودِيَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ، فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ إِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلٍ مُعْتَزِلٍ لَمْ يُصَلِّ فِي الْقَوْمِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "مَا مَنَعَكَ يَا فُلَانُ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ فِي الْقَوْمِ؟"، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَصَابَتْنِي جَنَابَةٌ، وَلَا مَاءَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:"عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّعِيدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَكْفِيكَ".

Sunan al-Darimi 767

Narrated by Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men were traveling. When the time for prayer came, they had no water with them, so they both performed tayammum (dry ablution) with clean earth and prayed. Then they found water while the time for prayer was still valid. One of them performed ablution and repeated the prayer, while the other did not. Afterwards, when they both came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him the story, you (O Prophet) said to the one who did not repeat the prayer, "You acted according to the Sunnah and your prayer is valid." (Agreed upon) And you said to the one who repeated the prayer, "You will have a double reward."

سیدنا ابوسعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ دو شخص سفر میں تھے، نماز کا وقت آ گیا، ان کے ساتھ پانی نہیں تھا، لہٰذا دونوں نے پاک مٹی سے تیمّم کیا اور نماز پڑھ لی، پھر انہیں پانی مل گیا اور نماز کا وقت باقی تھا، ایک شخص نے وضو کیا اور دوبارہ نماز دہرائی، دوسرے نے نہیں دہرائی، اس کے بعد جب وہ دونوں رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پاس آئے تو ماجرا بیان کیا، آپ ﷺ نے اس شخص سے فرمایا جس نے نماز نہیں دہرائی: ”تم نے سنت پر عمل کیا اور تمہاری نماز ہو گئی۔“ (کافی رہی)، اور دوسرے شخص سے فرمایا جس نے نماز دہرائی تھی: ”تمہارے لئے ڈبل ثواب ہے۔“

Sayyidina Abusaid Khudri razi Allah anhu se riwayat hai ki do shakhs safar mein thay, namaz ka waqt aa gaya, un ke sath pani nahi tha, lihaza donon ne pak mitti se tayammum kiya aur namaz parh li, phir unhen pani mil gaya aur namaz ka waqt baqi tha, ek shakhs ne wuzu kiya aur dobara namaz dohrai, dusre ne nahi dohrai, is ke bad jab wo donon Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke pass aaye to majra bayan kiya, Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne is shakhs se farmaya jisne namaz nahi dohrai: "Tum ne sunnat par amal kiya aur tumhari namaz ho gai." (Kafi rahi), aur dusre shakhs se farmaya jisne namaz dohrai thi: "Tumhare liye double sawab hai."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاق، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: خَرَجَ رَجُلَانِ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَحَضَرَتْهُمَا الصَّلَاةُ، وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمَا مَاءٌ، فَتَيَمَّمَا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا، فَصَلَّيَا، ثُمَّ وَجَدَا الْمَاءَ بَعْدُ فِي الْوَقْتِ، فَأَعَادَ أَحَدُهُمَا الصَّلَاةَ بِوُضُوءٍ، وَلَمْ يُعِدْ الْآخَرُ ثُمَّ أَتَيَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَا ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ لِلَّذِي لَمْ يُعِدْ: "أَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ وَأَجْزَأَتْكَ صَلَاتُكَ"، وَقَالَ لِلَّذِي تَوَضَّأَ وَأَعَادَ:"لَكَ الْأَجْرُ مَرَّتَيْنِ".
