Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we would say: Peace be upon Allah, before His servants, peace be upon Jibril and Mikail, peace be upon Israfil, peace be upon so-and-so, and so-and-so. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to us and said: "Allah Himself is As-Salam (the One free from all defects and imperfections; the Bestower of peace and security). (Why do you send salutations upon Him?) When you sit (for the Tashahhud) in prayer, say: 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi ....... ila wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin.' That is: 'All the verbal and physical acts of worship (or all the words of praise and glorification) all the acts of worship (prayers, etc.) and all the best praises and charities are for Allah alone. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy and blessings of Allah. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah.' When you say this, your greeting will reach every righteous servant in heaven and earth. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' Then let him supplicate with whatever he wishes."

سیدنا عبدالله بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: جب ہم رسول اللہ ﷺ کے پیچھے نماز پڑھتے تو کہتے: الله تعالیٰ پر سلام ہو اس کے بندوں سے پہلے، سلام ہو جبریل و میکائیل پر، سلام ہو اسرافیل پر، سلام ہو فلاں اور فلاں پر، سیدنا ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: پس رسول اللہ ﷺ ہماری طرف متوجہ ہوئے اور فرمایا: ”الله تعالیٰ تو خود سلام ہے (اس پر کیا سلام کرتے ہو)، جب تم نماز میں (تشہد کے لئے) بیٹھ جاؤ تو کہو: «التحيات لله ........... إلى وعلی عباد الله الصالحين» یعنی: ”تمام قولی و بدنی عبادتیں (یا تمام ادب و تعظيم کے کلمات) تمام عبادات (نماز یں وغیرہ) اور تمام بہترین تعریفیں و صدقات اللہ ہی کے لئے ہیں، آپ پر سلام ہو اے نبی اور اللہ کی رحمتیں اور اس کی برکتیں، ہم پر سلام اور اللہ کے تمام صالح بندوں پر سلام۔“ جب تم یہ کہو گے تو تمہارا سلام آسمان و زمین میں جہاں کہیں کوئی نیک بندہ ہے اس کو پہنچ جائے گا، میں گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، اور گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ محمد اللہ کے بندے اور رسول ہیں، پھر اس کے بعد جو چاہے دعا کرے۔“
Sayyidna Abdullah bin Masood Razi Allahu Anhu ne kaha: Jab hum Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke peeche namaz parhte to kehte: Allah Ta'ala par salam ho us ke bandon se pehle, salam ho Jibrail o Mika'il par, salam ho Israfil par, salam ho falan aur falan par, Sayyidna Ibn Masood Razi Allahu Anhu ne kaha: Pas Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) hamari taraf mutawajjah huye aur farmaya: "Allah Ta'ala to khud salam hai (us par kya salam karte ho), jab tum namaz mein (tashahhud ke liye) baith jao to kaho: «Attahiyyatu lillahi ........... ila wa'ala ibadillahis saliheen» yani: "Tamam qauli o badani ibadaten (ya tamam adab o ta'zeem ke kalimat) tamam ibadat (namazen waghaira) aur tamam behtarin tareefen o sadqaten Allah hi ke liye hain, aap par salam ho aye Nabi aur Allah ki rehmaten aur us ki barkaten, hum par salam aur Allah ke tamam saleh bandon par salam." Jab tum ye kahoge to tumhara salam aasman o zameen mein jahan kahin koi nek banda hai us ko pahunch jayega, main gawahi deta hun ki Allah ke siwa koi mabood nahin, aur gawahi deta hun ki Muhammad Allah ke bande aur rasool hain, phir us ke baad jo chahe dua kare.".
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا إِذَا صَلَّيْنَا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُلْنَا: السَّلَامُ عَلَى اللَّهِ قَبْلَ عِبَادِهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى مِيكَائِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى إِسْرَافِيلَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَى فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ. قَالَ: فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ:"إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى هُوَ السَّلَامُ، فَإِذَا جَلَسْتُمْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، فَقُولُوا: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، فَإِنَّكُمْ إِذَا قُلْتُمُوهَا أَصَابَتْ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، ثُمَّ لِيَتَخَيَّرْ مَا شَاءَ".
