Chapter on the entire earth being clean except for graveyards and bathrooms

باب: الأرض كلها طاهرة ما خلا المقبرة والحمام

Sunan al-Darimi 1427

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "I have been given five things which were not given to any one else before me. Allah sent me as a Prophet to all mankind while the Prophets before me were sent to their respective peoples only. And I have been made victorious by awe (cast into the hearts of the enemy) for a distance of one month's journey. And the earth has been made for me as a place of prayer and pure (i.e. I can pray wherever I wish and need not select a clean place for my prayer). And the booty has been made lawful for me, and I have been given the right of intercession (on the Day of Resurrection).

سیدنا جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”مجھے پانچ چیزیں عطا کی گئی ہیں جو مجھ سے پہلے کسی نبی کو نہیں دی گئیں۔ نبی خاص اپنی اپنی قوم کے لئے مبعوث ہوتے تھے اور مجھے تمام انسانوں کے لئے عام طور پر نبی بنا کر بھیجا گیا ہے۔ میرے لئے غنیمت کا مال حلال کیا گیا ہے جو مجھ سے پہلے نبیوں پر حرام تھا۔ اور تمام زمین میرے لئے پاک سجدہ گاہ اور طاہر بنا دی گئی۔ اور ہمارے دشمنوں کے (دلوں میں) ایک مہینے کی مسافت تک رعب ڈال دیا گیا (یعنی اتنی دور تک دشمن ہم سے ڈرتا ہے)۔ اور مجھے شفاعت عطا کی گئی۔“

Sayyidna Jabir bin Abdullah raziallahu anhu kahte hain ki Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: “Mujhe panch cheezein ata ki gai hain jo mujh se pehle kisi nabi ko nahi di gai. Nabi khas apni apni qaum ke liye mabus hote the aur mujhe tamam insaano ke liye aam tor par nabi bana kar bheja gaya hai. Mere liye ghanimat ka mal halal kiya gaya hai jo mujh se pehle nabiyon par haram tha. Aur tamam zameen mere liye pak sajdagah aur taher bana di gai. Aur hamare dushmanon ke (dilon mein) ek mahine ki musafat tak rub dal diya gaya (yani itni door tak dushman hum se darta hai). Aur mujhe shifa'at ata ki gai."

أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَسَّانَ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سَيَّارٌ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ يَزِيدَ الْفَقِيرَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ نَبِيٌّ قَبْلِي: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ خَاصَّةً، وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى النَّاسِ كَافَّةً، وَأُحِلَّتْ لِيَ الْمَغَانِمُ، وَحُرِّمَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلِي، وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الْأَرْضُ طَيِّبَةً مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا، وَيَرْعَبُ مِنَّا عَدُوُّنَا مَسِيرَةَ شَهْرٍ، وَأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ".

Abu Sa'eed Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "The entire earth is a place of prayer (masjid) except for graveyards and bathrooms." (Meaning it is not permissible to pray in graveyards and bathrooms). Imam Darimi, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked, "If someone prays in a graveyard, will their prayer be valid?" He replied, "If they prayed in a place where there was no grave, then their prayer would be valid," and he said, "Most of the narrators narrated this hadith in a mursal chain of narration."

سیدنا ابوسعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”تمام زمین سجده گاه (مسجد) ہے سوائے مقبرے اور حمام کے۔“ (یعنی مقبرے اور حمام میں نماز پڑھنا جائز نہیں)۔ امام دارمی رحمہ اللہ سے پوچھا گیا: اگر کوئی مقبرے میں نماز پڑھ لے تو کیا اس کی نماز ہو جائے گی؟ جواب دیا: اگر ایسی جگہ نماز پڑھ لی جہاں قبر نہیں تھی تو نماز ہو جائے گی، اور فرمایا: اکثر رواۃ نے اس حدیث کو مرسل روایت کیا ہے۔

Sayyidna Abu Saeed Khudri RA ne kaha: Rasool Allah SAW ne farmaya: Tamam zameen sajda gah (masjid) hai siwae qabre aur hammam ke (yani qabre aur hammam mein namaz parhna jaiz nahin). Imam Darmi RA se poocha gaya: Agar koi qabre mein namaz parh le to kya us ki namaz ho jaye gi? Jawab diya: Agar aisi jagah namaz parh li jahan qabar nahin thi to namaz ho jaye gi, aur farmaya: Aksar riwayat ne is hadees ko mursal riwayat kiya hai.

أَخْبَرَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، أَنْبأَنَا سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "الْأَرْضُ كُلُّهَا مَسْجِدٌ إِلَّا الْمَقْبَرَةَ وَالْحَمَّامَ". قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ: تُجْزِئُ الصَّلَاةُ فِي الْمَقْبَرَةِ؟ قَالَ: إِذَا لَمْ تَكُنْ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ فَنَعَمْ، وَقَالَ: الْحَدِيثُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ أَرْسَلُوهُ.
