Sunan al-Darimi 170
Muadh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent him to Yemen, he asked, "How will you judge if a case is presented to you?" He said: "I will judge according to the Book of Allah." He (the Prophet) said, "What if the matter is not found in the Book of Allah?" He said: "Then I will judge according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." He said, "What if the matter is not found in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "I will strive to form my own judgment and will spare no effort." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) patted the chest of Muadh (may Allah be pleased with him) (as a gesture of appreciation) and said, "All praise is due to Allah, who has guided the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to that with which the Messenger of Allah is pleased."

سیدنا معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ عنہ نے روایت کیا کہ جب نبی ﷺ نے انہیں یمن کی طرف بھیجا تو پوچھا کہ ”اگر تمہارے پاس کوئی مقدمہ آئے تو کس طرح فیصلہ کرو گے؟“ انہوں نے کہا: اللہ کی کتاب کے موافق فیصلہ کروں گا، آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ”اگر وہ مسئلہ کتاب اللہ میں نہ ہو تو کیا کرو گے؟“ عرض کیا: رسول اللہ ﷺ کی سنت کے مطابق فیصلہ کروں گا، فرمایا: ”اگر وہ مسئلہ سنت رسول اللہ میں بھی نہ ہو تو کیا کرو گے؟“ عرض کیا: غور و فکر سے اجتہاد کروں گا اور کوتاہی نہ کروں گا، راوی نے کہا: رسول اللہ ﷺ نے سیدنا معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ کا سینہ تھپکایا (شاباشی کے طور پر) اور فرمایا: ”سب طرح کی تعریف اللہ تعالیٰ ہی کو لائق ہے جس نے رسول اللہ ﷺ کے قاصد کو اس چیز کی توفیق بخشی جس سے اللہ کا رسول راضی اور خوش ہے۔“
Sayyidna Muaz bin Jabal (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne riwayat kiya keh jab Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne unhen Yaman ki taraf bheja to pucha keh "Agar tumhare pass koi muqaddama aaye to kis tarah faisla karoge?" Unhon ne kaha: "Allah ki kitaab ke muwafiq faisla karunga," Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: "Agar woh masla kitaab Allah mein na ho to kya karoge?" Arz kiya: "Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki sunnat ke mutabiq faisla karunga," Farmaya: "Agar woh masla sunnat Rasool Allah mein bhi na ho to kya karoge?" Arz kiya: "Ghor o fikr se ijtihad karunga aur kotahi na karunga," Rawi ne kaha: Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne Sayyidna Muaz (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ka seena thapkaaya (shabashi ke taur par) aur farmaya: "Sab tarah ki tareef Allah Ta'ala hi ko layeq hai jisne Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke qasid ko us cheez ki taufeeq bakhshi jisse Allah ka Rasool raazi aur khush hai."
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ، عَنْ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَمْرِو ابْنِ أَخِي الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ نَاسٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ حِمْصٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُعَاذٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، عَنْ مُعَاذٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمَّا بَعَثَهُ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ، قَالَ: "أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَرَضَ لَكَ قَضَاءٌ كَيْفَ تَقْضِي؟"، قَالَ: أَقْضِي بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ:"فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ؟"، قَالَ: فَبِسُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ:"فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ؟"، قَالَ: أَجْتَهِدُ رَأْيِي وَلَا آلُو، قَالَ: فَضَرَبَ صَدْرَهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ:"الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي وَفَّقَ رَسُولَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ لِمَا يُرْضِي رَسُولَ اللَّهِ".
