Book of Prayer

كِتَابُ الصَّلَاةِ

Hittan ibn `Abdillah Ar-Raqashi narrated: that Al-Ash'ari led his companions in prayer. When he sat down in his prayer, a man among the people said, "Has the prayer been made incumbent with righteousness and Zakah?" When Al-Ash'ari finished his prayer, he turned to the people and said, "Which of you said such and such words?" The people remained silent, so he said, "Was it you, Hittan?" He said, "By Allah, I did not say it, and I was afraid that you would beat me for it." A man among the people said, "I said it, and I did not intend anything but good by it." Al-Ash'ari said, "Do you not know what you are saying in your prayers? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delivered a sermon to us, taught us our Sunnah, and explained our prayer to us. He said: 'When the prayer is established, then straighten your rows, and let one of you lead you. When he says the Takbir, then say the Takbir. When he says, 'Ghair-il Maghdubi `alaihim wa la-d-dallin (not of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray),' then say, 'Ameen', may Allah guide you. Then, when he performs the Takbir for bowing, then say the Takbir and bow, for the Imam bows before you and rises before you.'" The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said, "That (bowing) corresponds to that (Takbir). When he says, 'Sami`a Allahu liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),' then say, 'Allahumma Rabbana lakal Hamd (O Allah, our Lord, to You be praise).' For Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said on the tongue of His Prophet (ﷺ): 'Sami`a Allahu liman Hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him).' Then, when he performs the Takbir for prostration, then say the Takbir and prostrate, for the Imam prostrates before you and rises before you." The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) said, "That (prostration) corresponds to that (Takbir). When he is sitting, then one of you should say: 'Attahiyyatu lillahi wassalawatu wattayyibatu, Assalamu `alaika Ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, Assalamu `alaina wa `ala `ibadillahis-salihin, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `Abduhu wa Rasuluh (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings be upon you. Peace be upon us, and upon Allah's righteous slaves. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).'"
