Chapter: Gaining benefit from knowledge and acting in accordance with it

باب الاِنْتِفَاعِ بِالْعِلْمِ وَالْعَمَلِ بِهِ
Sunan Ibn Majah 250
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : "One of the supplications that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was -
َاللَّهُمَّ إِّنِّّي أَعُوذُ بِّكَ مِّنْ عِّلْمٍ الَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِّنْ دُعَاءٍ الَ يُسْمَعُ وَمَنْ قَلْبٍ ال ٍيَخْشَعُ وَمِّنْ نَفْس ُالَ تَشْبَع [O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, from a supplication that is not heard, from a heart that does not fear (You) and from a Nafs that is not satisfied].

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم ﷺ کی دعاؤں میں یہ دعا بھی تھی: «اللهم إني أعوذ بك من علم لا ينفع ومن دعا لا يسمع ومن قلب لا يخشع ومن نفس لا تشبع» اے اللہ! میں اس علم سے پناہ مانگتا ہوں جو نفع نہ دے، اور اس دعا سے جو سنی نہ جائے، اور اس دل سے جو ( اللہ سے ) نہ ڈرے، اور اس نفس سے جو آسودہ نہ ہوتا ہو ۔
Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Nabi Akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki duaoon mein yeh dua bhi thi: «Alla hum inni a'oozu bika min ilmin laa yanfa'u wa min du'aa laa yusma'u wa min qalbin laa yakhashu'u wa min nafsin laa tashba'u» Aye Allah! Main is ilm se panaah maangta hoon jo nafa nah de, aur is dua se jo suni nah jaaye, aur is dil se jo (Allah se) nah dare, aur is nafs se jo asoodah nah hota ho 1؎.
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : "The Apostle of Allah ( صلى ہللاعليه و آله وسلم) used to supplicate -
ِِّّّ َّ ِّ عَلَى كُلِّ دْنِّي عِّلْمًا وَالْحَمْدُ َّللاللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِّي بِّمَا عَلَّمْتَنِّي وَعَلِّّمْنِّي مَا يَنْفَعُنِّي وَ ز ٍحَال [ O Allah (جَلَّ ذُو), benefit me by that which You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and increase my knowledge. Praise is to Allah in all circumstances].'"

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ فرماتے تھے: اے اللہ! میرے لیے اس چیز کو نفع بخش اور مفید بنا دے جو تو نے مجھے سکھایا ہے، مجھے وہ چیز سکھا دے جو میرے لیے نفع بخش اور مفید ہو، اور میرا علم زیادہ کر دے، اور ہر حال میں ساری تعریفیں اللہ کے لیے ہیں ۔
Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) farmate they: Aey Allah! Mere liye is cheez ko nafa bakhsh aur mufeed bana de jo tu ne mujhe sikhaya hai, mujhe wo cheez sikha de jo mere liye nafa bakhsh aur mufeed ho, aur mera ilm zyada kar de, aur har haal mein sari taareefein Allah ke liye hain.
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever acquires knowledge by which the pleasure of Allah is sought, but he only acquires it for the purpose of worldly gain, will not smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.' (Hasan) Another chain with similar wording.
Grade: Sahih
ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: جس شخص نے علم دین کو جس سے خالص اللہ تعالیٰ کی رضا مندی مقصود ہوتی ہے محض کسی دنیاوی فائدہ کے لیے سیکھا تو وہ قیامت کے دن جنت کی خوشبو تک نہیں پائے گا ۔
Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Jis shakhs ne ilm-e-deen ko jis se khalees Allah Ta'ala ki raza mandhi maqsud hoti hai, mahz kisi dunyavi faide ke liye seekha to woh qiyamat ke din jannat ki khushboo tak nahin payega.
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that : The Apostle of Allah ( صلى ہللا عليه وآله وسلم) said : "Whoever seeks knowledge in order to argue with the foolish, or to show off before the scholars, or to attract people's attention, will be in Hell."
Grade: Da'if
عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم ﷺ نے فرمایا: جس شخص نے علم سیکھا تاکہ بے وقوفوں سے بحث و مباحثہ کرے، یا علماء پر فخر کرے، یا لوگوں کو اپنی جانب مائل کرے، تو وہ جہنم میں ہو گا ۔
Abdullaah bin Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain ke Nabi Akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Jis shakhs ne ilm seekha taka ke be waqfoon se bahas o mubaahisa kare, ya ulama par fakhr kare, ya logoon ko apni janib mail kare, to wo Jahannam mein hoga.
It was narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that : The Prophet ( صلى ہللا عليه وآله وسلم) said: "Do not seek knowledge in order to show off in front of the scholars, or to argue with the foolish, and do not choose the best seat in a gathering, due to it (in view of the knowledge which you have acquired) for whoever does that, the Fire, the Fire (awaits him)."

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم ﷺ نے فرمایا: تم علم کو علماء پر فخر کرنے یا کم عقلوں سے بحث و تکرار کے لیے نہ سیکھو، اور علم دین کو مجالس میں اچھے مقام کے حصول کا ذریعہ نہ بناؤ، جس نے ایسا کیا تو اس کے لیے جہنم ہے، جہنم ۔
Jabir bin Abdullah ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain ke Nabi e akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Tum ilm ko ulama par fakhr karne ya kam aqlon se baat wa takrar ke liye nah seekho, aur ilm e din ko majalis mein ache maqam ke hasil ka zariya nah banao, jis ne aisa kiya to us ke liye jahannam hai, jahannam
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that:
The Prophet said: There will be some people among my Ummah (nation) who will gain knowledge of the religion, and they will recite Qur'an, and will say: 'We come to the rulers so that we may have some share of their worldly wealth, and we will make sure that our religious commitment is not affected,' but that will not be the case. Just as nothing can be harvested from the Qatad except thorns, so nothing can be gained from being close to them except (sins).' (Da'if)(One of the narrators) Muhammed bin As-Sabbah said: It is as if he meant, 'except sins'.

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم ﷺ نے فرمایا: بیشک میری امت کے کچھ لوگ دین کا علم حاصل کریں گے، قرآن پڑھیں گے، اور کہیں گے کہ ہم امراء و حکام کے پاس چلیں اور ان کی دنیا سے کچھ حصہ حاصل کریں، پھر ہم اپنے دین کے ساتھ ان سے الگ ہو جائیں گے، ( آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: ) یہ بات ہونے والی نہیں ہے، جس طرح کانٹے دار درخت سے کانٹا ہی چنا جا سکتا ہے، اسی طرح ان کی قربت سے صرف... چنا جا سکتا ہے ۔ محمد بن صباح راوی نے کہا: گویا آپ نے ( گناہ ) مراد لیا۔
Abdul-Allah ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain ke Nabi-e-Akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Beshak meri ummat ke kuchh log din ka ilm hasil karein ge, Quran parhen ge, aur kahen ge ke hum amra o hukam ke pas chalein aur un ki duniya se kuchh hissa hasil karen, phir hum apne din ke sath un se alag ho jayen ge, ( Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: ) yeh baat hone wali nahi hai, jis tarah kanta dar darakht se kanta hi chuna ja sakta hai, isi tarah un ki qurbat se sirf... chuna ja sakta hai. Muhammad ibn Sabah rawi ne kaha: Goya aap ne ( gunah ) murad liya.
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
The Messenger of Allah said: 'Seek refuge with Allah from the pit of grief.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the pit of grief?' He said: 'A valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge four hundred times each day.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, who will enter it?' He said: 'It has been prepared for reciters of the Qur'an who want to show off their deeds. The most hateful of reciters of the Qur'an to Allah are those who visit the rulers.' (Da'if) Other chains of narrators.

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: «جب الحزن» سے اللہ کی پناہ مانگو ، لوگوں نے پوچھا: اللہ کے رسول! «جب الحزن» کیا ہے؟ آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: جہنم میں ایک وادی ہے جس سے جہنم ہر روز چار سو مرتبہ پناہ مانگتی ہے ، لوگوں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! اس میں کون لوگ داخل ہوں گے؟ آپ ﷺ نے فرمایا: اسے ان قراء کے لیے تیار کیا گیا ہے جو اپنے اعمال میں ریاکاری کرتے ہیں، اور اللہ تعالیٰ کے نزدیک بدترین قاری وہ ہیں جو مالداروں کا چکر کاٹتے ہیں ۔ محاربی کہتے ہیں: امراء سے مراد ظالم حکمران ہیں۔
Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: «Jab al-hzan» se Allah ki panah mango, logon ne poocha: Allah ke Rasool! «Jab al-hzan» kya hai? Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Jahannum mein ek wadi hai jis se Jahannum har roz chaar so martaba panah mangti hai, logon ne arz kiya: Allah ke Rasool! Is mein kaun log dakhil honge? Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Isay in qaraa ke liye tayyar kiya gaya hai jo apne amal mein riyakari karte hain, aur Allah ta'ala ke nazdik badtarin qari woh hain jo maldaaron ka chakkar kaatte hain. Muharbi kehte hain: Amra se mraad zalim hukmaran hain.
It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالی عنہ) said : "If the people of knowledge had taken care of it and presented it only to those who cared for it, they would have become the leaders of their age by virtue of that. But they squandered it on the people of wealth and status in this world in order to gain some worldly benefit, so the people of wealth and status began to look down on them. I heard Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say : 'Whoever focuses all his concerns on one issue, the concerns of the Hereafter, Allah will suffice him and spare him the worries of this world. But whoever wanders off in concern over different worldly issues, Allah will not care in which of these valleys he is destroyed.'"
There is another chain of narrators for this Hadith with similar wording.
Grade: Da'if
عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا اگر اہل علم علم کی حفاظت کرتے، اور اس کو اس کے اہل ہی کے پاس رکھتے تو وہ اپنے زمانہ والوں کے سردار ہوتے، لیکن ان لوگوں نے دنیا طلبی کے لیے اہل دنیا پر علم کو نچھاور کیا، تو ان کی نگاہوں میں ذلیل ہو گئے، میں نے نبی اکرم ﷺ کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا: جس نے اپنی تمام تر سوچوں کو ایک سوچ یعنی آخرت کی سوچ بنا لیا، تو اللہ تعالیٰ اس کے دنیاوی غموں کے لیے کافی ہو گا، اور جس کی تمام تر سوچیں دنیاوی احوال میں پریشان رہیں، تو اللہ تعالیٰ کو کچھ پرواہ نہیں کہ وہ کس وادی میں ہلاک ہو جائے ۔
Abdul'lah bin Masood (رضي الله تعالى عنه) nay kaha agar ahl ilm ilm ki hifazat karte aur is ko is ke ahl hi ke pas rakhte to woh apne zamana walon ke sardar hote lekin in logon ne dunya talabi ke liye ahl dunya par ilm ko nachhawar kiya to in ki nigahon mein zil ho gaye main nay Nabi Akram sall Allahu alaihi wasallam ko farmate huye suna jis nay apni tamam tar soochon ko ek sooch yani aakhirat ki sooch bana liya to Allah Ta'ala is ke duniyawi ghamoun ke liye kafi hoga aur jis ki tamam tar soochen duniyawi ahwal mein pareshan rahin to Allah Ta'ala ko kuchh parwah nahin ki woh kis wadi mein halak ho jaaye 1؎.
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar ( رضئہللا تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: "Whoever seeks knowledge for a reason other than the sake of Allah, or intends it for a purpose other than for the sake of Allah, let him take his place in Hell."
Grade: Da'if
عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم ﷺ نے فرمایا: جس شخص نے غیر اللہ کے لیے علم طلب کیا، یا اللہ کے علاوہ کی ( رضا مندی ) چاہی، تو وہ اپنا ٹھکانا جہنم کو بنا لے ۔
Abdul-allah bin Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a kehte hain ke Nabi-e-Akram (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Jis shakhs ne ghair Allah ke liye ilm talab kiya, ya Allah ke alawa ki (raza mandi) chahi, to wo apna thakan jahannam ko bana le.
It was narrated that Hudhaifah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : "I heard the Apostle of Allah ( صلىہللا عليه و آله وسلم) say: 'Do not acquire knowledge in order to show off before the scholars, or to argue with the foolish, or to attract people's attention, for whoever does that will be in Hell.'"

حذیفہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے رسول اللہ ﷺ کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا: تم علم کو علماء پر فخر کرنے یا کم عقلوں سے بحث و تکرار کرنے یا لوگوں کو اپنی جانب متوجہ کرنے کے لیے نہ سیکھو، جس نے ایسا کیا اس کا ٹھکانا جہنم میں ہو گا ۔
Huzaifa (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke main ne Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ko farmate huye suna: Tum ilm ko ulama par fakhr karne ya kam aqluon se bais w takrar karne ya logoon ko apni janib mutvajjah karne ke liye nah seekho, jis ne aisa kiya us ka thakaan Jahannam me hoga.
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said : "The Apostle of Allah ( صلى ہللاعليه و آله وسلم) said: 'Whoever seeks knowledge in order to argue with the foolish, or to show off before the scholars, or to attract people's attention, Allah will admit him to Hell.'"

ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا: جس نے علم کو علماء پر فخر کرنے، اور بیوقوفوں سے بحث و تکرار کرنے، اور لوگوں کو اپنی جانب متوجہ کرنے کے لیے سیکھا، اللہ اسے جہنم میں داخل کرے گا ۔
Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kehte hain ke Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Jis ne ilm ko ulama par fakhr karne, aur bewqofoon se bahas o takrar karne, aur logoon ko apni janib mutwajjih karne ke liye seekha, Allah usse jahannam mein daakhil karega.
