Chapter on the Mention of the Narration Indicating That the Prophet (PBUH) Only Prohibited Certain Types of Poetry in Mosques, Not All of It
بَابُ ذِكْرِ الْخَبَرِ الدَّالِّ (عَلَىأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا نَهَى عَنْ تَنَاشُدِ بَعْضِ الْأَشْعَارِ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ لَا عَنْ جَمِيعِهَا؛

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 1307
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was reciting poetry in the mosque. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at him (angrily), so he said, "I used to recite poetry even when there was someone better than you (i.e., the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he turned to Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I ask you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, 'O Hassan, answer (the disbelievers) on my behalf. O Allah, support him with the Holy Spirit?'" He said, "Yes." (I have heard this statement from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him). In the narration of Saeed, the words are, "I used to recite poetry in this mosque when there was someone better than you in it." In the narration of Hassan, the words are, "I used to recite poetry (while) there was someone better and superior to you in the mosque."

سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ، سیدنا حسان رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس سے گذرے جبکہ وہ مسجد میں شعر پڑھ رہے تھے۔ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے ان کی طرف (غصّے سے) دیکھا تو اُنہوں نے عرض کی کہ میں (اس وقت بھی) شعر پڑھا کرتا تھا جبکہ اس میں تم سے افضل ہستی موجود ہوتی تھی (یعنی نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) پھر وہ سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کی طرف متوجہ ہوئے اور فرمایا کہ میں تمہیں اللہ کی قسم دے کر پوچھتا ہوں، کیا تم نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو یہ فرماتے ہوئے سنا ہے کہ ”(اے حسان) میری طرف سے (مشرکین کی ہجو کا) جواب دو، اے اللہ، اس کی مدد روح القدس کے ساتھ فرما؟“ اُنہوں نے فرمایا کہ ہاں۔ (میں نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا یہ فرمان سنا ہے) جناب سعید کی روایت میں یہ الفاظ ہیں کہ میں اس مسجد میں شعر پڑھا کرتا تھا جبکہ اس میں تم سے افضل شخصیت مو جود تھی۔ جناب حسن کی روایت میں الفاظ اس طرح ہیں کہ میں شعر پڑھا کرتا تھا (جبکہ) اس میں مسجد میں تم سے بہتر واعلیٰ ہستی موجود تھی۔
Sayyedna Abu Huraira Radi Allahu Anhu bayan karte hain ke Sayyedna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu, Sayyedna Hassan Radi Allahu Anhu ke pass se guzre jabke woh masjid mein sher padh rahe the. Sayyedna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne un ki taraf (gusse se) dekha to unhon ne arz ki ke mein (iss waqt bhi) sher padha karta tha jabke iss mein tum se afzal hasti mojood hoti thi (yani Nabi Kareem Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) phir woh Sayyedna Abu Huraira Radi Allahu Anhu ki taraf mutawajjah hue aur farmaya ke mein tumhen Allah ki qasam de kar poochta hoon, kya tum ne Rasul Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ko yeh farmate hue suna hai ke “(ae Hassan) meri taraf se (mushrikeen ki hijoo ka) jawab do, ae Allah, iss ki madad Rooh al-Qudus ke sath farma?” Unhon ne farmaya ke haan. (mein ne aap Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ka yeh farmaan suna hai) Janab Saeed ki riwayat mein yeh alfaz hain ke mein iss masjid mein sher padha karta tha jabke iss mein tum se afzal shakhsiyat mojood thi. Janab Hassan ki riwayat mein alfaz iss tarah hain ke mein sher padha karta tha (jabke) iss mein masjid mein tum se behtar wa aala hasti mojood thi.
نَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ: مَا حَفِظْتُهُ مِنَ الزُّهْرِيِّ إِلا عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ: مَرَّ عُمَرُ، بِحَسَّانَ، وَهُوَ يُنْشِدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَلَحَظَ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: قَدْ كُنْتُ أَنْشُدُ وَفِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، فَقَالَ: أَنْشُدُكَ اللَّهَ أَسَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، يَقُولُ: " أَجِبْ عَنِّي، اللَّهُمَّ أَيِّدْهُ بِرُوحِ الْقُدُسِ؟" قَالَ: نَعَمْ. وَحَدَّثَنَا، قَالَ: وَثناهُ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالا: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ بِهَذَا مِثْلَهُ، وَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ: قَدْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ فِيهِ، وَفِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ، وَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: قَدْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ فِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ
