Anas bin Malik (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, when the People of the Book offer you salutations, you should say, the same to you.
Anas b. Malik reported Allah's Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) as saying:
When the People of the Book offer you salutations, you should say: The same to you.
Anas b. Malik reported Allah's Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) as saying:
When the People of the Book offer you salutations, you should say: The same to you.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ح وَحَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ " .
Sahih Muslim 2163b
Anas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported that the Companions of Allah's Apostle (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) said to him, the People of the Book offer us salutations (by saying as-Salamu-Alaikum). How should we reciprocate them? Thereupon he said, say, Wa 'Alaikum (and upon you too).
امام صاحب اپنے مختلف اساتذہ کی سندوں سے، حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ سے بیان کرتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھیوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا، اہل کتاب ہمیں سلام کہتے ہیں تو ہم انہیں کیسے جواب دیں؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”تم کہو، وعلیکم
Imam Sahib apne mukhtalif asatiza ki sanadon se, Hazrat Anas (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se bayan karte hain ke Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ke saathiyon ne Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) se pucha, Ahl e Kitab hamein salam kehte hain to hum unhein kaise jawab dein? Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Tum kaho, Wa Alaikum" (Aur tum par bhi).
Ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالی عنہ) reported Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, when the Jews offer you salutations, some of them say as-Sam-u-Alaikum (death be upon you). You should say (in response to it), let it be upon you.
حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالی عنہما بیان کرتے ہیں، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”یہود جب تمہیں سلام کہتے ہیں تو ان میں سے ایک کہتا ہے، تم پر موت آئے تو تم کہو، علیک۔
Hazrat Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhuma) bayan karte hain, Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Yahud jab tumhein salam kehte hain to un mein se ek kehta hai, tum par maut aaye to tum kaho, Alaika (Aur tum par)."
This Hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) through another chain of transmitters with a slight variation of wording.
امام صاحب یہی روایت ایک اور استاد سے، اس فرق سے بیان کرتے ہیں کہ آپ نے ”فقل عليك
Imam Sahib yehi riwayat ek aur ustaad se, iss farq se bayan karte hain ke aap ne "Faqul Alaika" (To tum kaho, aur tum par) farmaya.
وَحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِمِثْلِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ " فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكَ " .
Sahih Muslim 2165a
'A'isha reported that a group of Jews came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and sought his audience and said:As-Sam-u-'Alaikum. A'isha said in response: As-Sam-u-'Alaikum (death be upon you) and curse also, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'A'isha, verily Allah loves kindness in every matter. She said: Did you bear what they said? Thereupon he said: Did you not hear that I said (to them): Wa 'Alaikum.
حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہا بیان کرتی ہیں، یہود کے ایک گروہ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے ملنے کی اجازت طلب کرتے ہوئے کہا، السام عليكم،
Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) bayan karti hain, Yahud ke ek giroh ne Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) se milne ki ijazat talab karte hue kaha, As-samu Alaikum (Maut ho tum par), to Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Wa Alaikum" (Aur tum par).
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لِزُهَيْرٍ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتِ اسْتَأْذَنَ رَهْطٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ . فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَاللَّعْنَةُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ " . قَالَتْ أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ مَا قَالُوا قَالَ " قَدْ قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ " .
Sahih Muslim 2165b
This Hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Zuhri that Allah's Apostle (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) said, I said Alaikum, and the transmitter did not make mention of the word ‘and’.
امام صاحب کو یہی روایت اور اساتذہ نے بھی اپنی اپنی سند سے سنائی، اس میں ہے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”میں کہہ چکا ہوں، عليكم،
Imam Sahib ko yehi riwayat aur asatiza ne bhi apni apni sanad se sunai, us mein hai, Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Main keh chuka hun, Alaikum (Tum par bhi), to main ne un par wahi dua ki hai, jo unhone mere liye ki hai, aur un ki dua qabool nahin hoti, jabke meri dua qabool hoti hai."
'A'isha reported that some Jews came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) and they said:Abu'l-Qasim (the Kunya of the Holy Prophet), as-Sam-u-'Alaikum, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Wa 'Alaikum. A'isha reported: In response to these words of theirs, I said: But let there be death upon you and disgrace also, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'A'isha, do not use harsh words. She said: Did you hear what they said? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Did I not respond to them when they said that; I said to them: Wa 'Alaikum (let it be upon you).
حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہا بیان کرتی ہیں، نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس کچھ یہودی لوگ آئے اور کہا، السام عليك،

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُنَاسٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالُوا السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ . قَالَ " وَعَلَيْكُمْ " . قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ قُلْتُ بَلْ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَالذَّامُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " يَا عَائِشَةُ لاَ تَكُونِي فَاحِشَةً " . فَقَالَتْ مَا سَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا فَقَالَ " أَوَلَيْسَ قَدْ رَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الَّذِي قَالُوا قُلْتُ وَعَلَيْكُمْ " .
Sahih Muslim 2165d
This hadith has been reported on the authority of A'znash with a slight variation of wording. 'A'isha understood their meaning and cursed them and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:'A'isha. (do not do that) for Allah does not like the use of harsh words, and it was at this stage that this verse of Allah. the Exalt. ed and Glorious. was revealed:" And when they come to thee, they greet thee with a greeting with which Allah greets thee not" (Iviii. 8) to the end of the verse.
امام صاحب یہی روایت ایک اور استاد سے یوں بیان کرتے ہیں، حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہا نے ان کی بات سمجھ لی اور انہیں برا بھلا کہا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”رک جا، باز رہ اے عائشہ! کیونکہ اللہ تعالیٰ بدگوئی اور بدزبانی کو آغاز اور جواب میں پسند نہیں کرتا۔“ اور اس میں یہ اضافہ ہے، اس پر اللہ تعالیٰ نے یہ آیت اتاری، ”جب یہ لوگ آپ کے پاس آتے ہیں، آپ کو اس طرح سلام کہتے ہیں، جس طرح اللہ نے آپ کو سلام نہیں کہا۔“
Imam Sahib yehi riwayat ek aur ustaad se yoon bayan karte hain, Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) ne un ki baat samajh li aur unhein bura bhala kaha to Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Ruk ja, baaz rah aye Aisha! Kyunki Allah Ta'ala bad goyi aur bad zubani ko aaghaz aur jawab mein pasand nahin karta." Aur us mein yeh izafa hai, iss par Allah Ta'ala ne yeh aayat utari, "Jab yeh log aap ke paas aate hain, aap ko iss tarah salam kehte hain, jis tarah Allah ne aap ko salam nahin kaha."
Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported that some people from amongst the Jews said to Allah's Apostle (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) Abu'l-Qasim, as-Sam-u-'Alaikum, whereupon he said, Wa 'Alaikum, Ummul Momineen A'isha (رضي الله تعالى عنها) was enraged and asked him (Allah's Apostle ﷺ) whether he had not heard what they had said. He said, I did hear, and I retorted to them (and the curse that I invoked upon them would receive response from Allah), but (the curse that they invoked upon us) would not be responded.
حضرت جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہما بیان کرتے ہیں، کچھ یہودیوں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو سلام کہا، السّام عليك،
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhuma) bayan karte hain, kuchh Yahudiyon ne Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ko salam kaha, As-samu Alaikum (Maut ho tum par), to Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Wa Alaikum" (Aur tum par).
Abu Huraira (رضي الله تعالى عنه) reported Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it.
حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”یہود اور نصاریٰ کو پہلے سلام نہ کہو اور جب تم راستہ میں ان میں سے کسی کو ملو تو اس کے لیے راستہ تنگ کر دیا کرو تنگ راستہ پر مجبور کرو۔“
Hazrat Abu Huraira (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Yahud aur Nasara ko pehle salam na kaho aur jab tum raste mein un mein se kisi ko milo to us ke liye rasta tang kar diya karo tang rasta par majboor karo."
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Suhail with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording. The hadith transmitted on the authority of Waki', the words are 'When you meet the Jews." And in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Shu'ba, the words are:'When you meet the People of the Book." And in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Jarir the words are:" When you meet them," but none amongst the polytheists has been mentioned explicitly by name.
امام صاحب یہی روایت اپنے مختلف اساتذہ سے بیان کرتے ہیں، وکیع کی حدیث میں ہے ”جب تم یہود سے ملو۔“ ابن جعفر، شعبہ سے بیان کرتے ہیں کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اہل کتاب کے بارے میں کہا اور جریر کی حدیث میں ہے ”جب تم انہیں ملو۔“ اور آپ نے کسی مشرک کا نام نہیں لیا۔
Imam Sahib yehi riwayat apne mukhtalif asatiza se bayan karte hain, Wakee' ki hadith mein hai "Jab tum Yahud se milo." Ibn Jafar, Shu'bah se bayan karte hain ke Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne Ahl e Kitab ke bare mein kaha aur Jarir ki hadith mein hai "Jab tum unhein milo." Aur aap ne kisi mushrik ka naam nahin liya.
