Chapter: The obligation to fast Ramadan when the crescent is sighted, and to break the fast when the crescent is sighted, and that if it is cloudy at the beginning or end of the month, then the month should be completed as thirty days.

بَاب وُجُوبِ صَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَالْفِطْرِ لِرُؤْيَةِ الْهِلَالِ وَأَنَّهُ إِذَا غُمَّ فِي أَوَّلِهِ أَوْ آخِرِهِ أُكْمِلَتْ عِدَّةُ الشَّهْرِ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا

Sa'd bin 'Ubaida narrated that Ibn Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) heard a person saying, this night is the midnight (of the month). Upon this he said to him, how do you know that it is the midnight (of the month), for I heard the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying, ‘the month is thus and thus (and he pointed with his ten fingers twice) and thus (at the third time he pointed with all his fingers but withdrew or folded his thumb).’
سعد بن عبیدہ رحمۃ اللہ علیہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے ایک آدمی کو یہ کہتے ہوئے سنا کہ آج رات نصف ماہ کی رات ہے تو انھوں نے اس سے کہا تمھیں کیسے پتہ چلا کہ آج رات آدھا ماہ گزر گیا؟ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا: ”مہینہ ایسا ایسا ہوتا ہے“ دو دفعہ اپنی دس دس انگلیوں سے اشارہ کیا۔ ”اور ایسا ہے“ (تیسری دفعہ اپنی سب انگلیوں سے اشارہ کیا اور اپنے انگوٹھے کو روک لیا یا ہٹا لیا۔ یعنی اپنے انگوٹھے کو بند کر لیا) ”حَبَسَ“ روک لیا ”خَنَسَ“ ہٹا لیا پیچھے کر لیا۔
Saad bin Ubaida (Rehmatullahi Alaihi) bayan karte hain ke Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhum) ne ek aadmi ko yeh kehte hue suna ke aaj raat nisf-mah ki raat hai toh unhon ne us se kaha tumhein kaise pata chala ke aaj raat aadha mah guzar gaya? Main ne Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ko farmatay hue suna: "Mahina aisa aisa hota hai" do dafa apni das das unglion se isharah kiya. "Aur aisa hai" (teesri dafa apni sab unglion se isharah kiya aur apne angoothe ko rok liya ya hata liya. Yani apne angoothe ko band kar liya) "habasa" rok liya "khanasa" hata liya peeche kar liya.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ، اللَّهِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ، - رضى الله عنهما - رَجُلاً يَقُولُ اللَّيْلَةَ لَيْلَةُ النِّصْفِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَا يُدْرِيكَ أَنَّ اللَّيْلَةَ النِّصْفُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ " الشَّهْرُ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا " . وَأَشَارَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ الْعَشْرِ مَرَّتَيْنِ " وَهَكَذَا " . فِي الثَّالِثَةِ وَأَشَارَ بِأَصَابِعِهِ كُلِّهَا وَحَبَسَ أَوْ خَنَسَ إِبْهَامَهُ " .
