Chapter: Clarifying that it does not matter whether the crescent is large or small, for Allah, the Most High, causes it to appear for long enough that people can see it, and if it is cloudy then thirty days should be completed

Sahih Muslim 1088a
Abi al-Bakhtari reported that they went out to perform Umra and when they encamped in the valley of Nakhla, we tried to see the new moon. Some of the people said, it was three nights old, and others (said) that it was two nights old. We then met Ibn Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) and told him we had seen the new moon, but that some of the people said it was three nights old and others that it was two nights old. He asked on which night we had seen it; and when we told him we had seen it on such and such night, he said the Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) had said, verily Allah deferred it till the time it is seen, so it is to be reckoned from the night you saw it.
ابو البختری رحمۃ اللہ علیہ سے روایت ہے کہ ہم عمرہ کے لیے نکلے، جب بطن نخلہ نامی مقام پر پڑاؤ کیا تو ہم نے ایک دوسرے کو چاند دکھایا، بعض لوگوں نے کہا: تیسری رات کا چاند ہے اور بعض نے کہا: دوسری رات کا ہے اور ہماری ملاقات ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے ہوئی تو ہم نے پوچھا: ہم نے چاند دیکھا تو بعض لوگوں نے کہا: تیسری رات کا چاند ہے اور بعض لوگوں نے کہا: دوسری رات کا ہے۔ آپ نے پوچھا: تم نے اسے کس رات دیکھا؟ تو ہم نے بتایا کہ فلاں فلاں رات کو دیکھا ہے۔ اس پر انھوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اللہ اسے دیکھنے کے لیے بڑھا دیتا ہے درحقیقت وہ اس رات کا ہے جس رات تم نے اسے دیکھا ہے ”مَدَّة“ دیکھنے کے لیے اس کی مدت رؤیت بڑھا دی۔
Abu Bakhtari (Rehmatullahi Alaihi) se riwayat hai ke hum Umrah ke liye nikle, jab Batn-e-Nakhlah nami maqam par parao kiya toh hum ne ek doosray ko chand dikhaya, baaz logon ne kaha: teesri raat ka chand hai aur baaz ne kaha: doosri raat ka hai aur hamari mulaqat Ibn Abbas (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhum) se hui toh hum ne poocha: hum ne chand dekha toh baaz logon ne kaha: teesri raat ka chand hai aur baaz logon ne kaha: doosri raat ka hai. Aap ne poocha: tum ne isay kis raat dekha? Toh hum ne bataya ke falan falan raat ko dekha hai. Is par unhon ne kaha: Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: Allah isay dekhne ke liye barha deta hai dar-haqiqat woh us raat ka hai jis raat tum ne isay dekha hai "maddah" dekhne ke liye is ki muddat-e-ruyat barha di.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ، مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ، قَالَ خَرَجْنَا لِلْعُمْرَةِ فَلَمَّا نَزَلْنَا بِبَطْنِ نَخْلَةَ - قَالَ - تَرَاءَيْنَا الْهِلاَلَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ ثَلاَثٍ . وَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ لَيْلَتَيْنِ قَالَ فَلَقِينَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقُلْنَا إِنَّا رَأَيْنَا الْهِلاَلَ فَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ ثَلاَثٍ وَقَالَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ هُوَ ابْنُ لَيْلَتَيْنِ . فَقَالَ أَىَّ لَيْلَةٍ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا لَيْلَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا . فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَدَّهُ لِلرُّؤْيَةِ فَهُوَ لِلَيْلَةِ رَأَيْتُمُوهُ " .
