Chapter: Clarifying the emphatic prohibition against killing oneself; The one who kills himself with something will be punished with it in the fire; And that no one will enter Paradise but a muslim

باب غِلَظِ تَحْرِيمِ قَتْلِ الإِنْسَانِ نَفْسَهُ وَإِنَّ مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ بِشَيْءٍ عُذِّبَ بِهِ فِي النَّارِ وَأَنَّهُ لاَ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ إِلاَّ نَفْسٌ مُسْلِمَةٌ

Sahih Muslim 112
It is reported on the authority of Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that there was an encounter between the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and the polytheists, and they fought (against one another). At the conclusion of the battle the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) bent his steps towards his army and they (the enemies) bent their steps towards their army. And there was a person (his name was Quzman and he was one of the hypocrites) among the Companions of the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) who did not spare a detached (fighter of the enemy) but pursued and killed him with the sword. They (the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ) said : None served us better today than this man. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) remarked: Verily he is one of the denizens of Fire. One of the people (Muslims) said : I will constantly shadow him. Then this man went out along with him. He halted whenever he halted, and ran along with him whenever he ran. He (the narrator) said : The man was seriously injured. He (could not stand the pain) and hastened his own death. He placed the blade of the sword on the ground with the tip between his chest and then pressed himself against the sword and killed himself. Then the man (following him) went to the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and said : I bear testimony that verily you are the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), He (the Prophet ﷺ) said : What is the matter? He replied : The person about whom you just mentioned that he was one among the denizens of Fire and the people were surprised (at this) and I said to them that I would bring (the news about him) and consequently I went out in search of him till I (found him ) to be very seriously injured. He hastened his death. He placed the blade of the sword upon the ground and its tip between his chest and then pressed himself against that and killed himself. Thereupon the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) remarked: A person performs the deeds which to the people appear to be the deeds befitting the dweller of Paradise, but he is in fact one of the denizens of Hell. And verily a person does an act which in the eyes of public is one which is done by the denizens of Hell, but the person is one among the dwellers of Paradise.
حضرت سہل بن سعد ساعدی ؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور مشرکوں کا آمنا سامنا ہوا اور جنگ شروع ہو گئی جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اپنے لشکر کی طرف پلٹے اور فریقِ ثانی اپنے لشکر کی طرف جھکا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھیوں میں ایک آدمی تھا جو دشمن سے الگ ہونے والے کا تعاقب کرتا اور اپنی تلوار سے اس کو موت کے گھاٹ اتار دیتا، لوگوں نے کہا، آج جس قدر اس نے کام کیا ہے (مسلمانوں کو فائدہ پہنچایا) اس قدر کسی نے نفع نہیں پہنچایا، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اس کے باوجود یہ دوزخی ہے۔“ تو لوگوں میں سے ایک آدمی کہنے لگا: میں ہر وقت اس کے ساتھ رہوں گا۔ تو وہ اس کے ہمراہ نکلا، جہاں وہ ٹھہرتا وہیں وہ ٹھہر جاتا اور جب وہ تیز رفتاری اختیار کرتا تو وہ بھی تیز چل پڑتا۔ وہ آدمی شدید زخمی ہو گیا اس نے جلد موت چاہی اور اس نے اپنی تلوار کا پھل زمین پر رکھا اور اس کی دھار اپنی چھاتی پر پھر اپنی تلوار پر پورا وزن ڈال کر خود کشی کر لی، تو دوسرا آدمی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا اور عرض کیا: میں آپ کی رسالت کی گواہی دیتا ہوں! آپ نے پوچھا: ”کیا سبب ہے؟“ تو اس نے کہا: وہ آدمی جس کے بارے میں آپ نے ابھی بتایا تھا: کہ وہ دوزخی ہے اور لوگوں پر یہ بات گراں گزری تھی تو میں نے لوگوں کو کہا تھا میں اس کے انجام کو جاننے کا ذمہ لیتا ہوں۔ میں اس کی تلاش میں نکلا یہاں تک کہ وہ شدید زخمی ہو گیا، تو اس نے جلد موت چاہی، اس کے لیے اپنی تلوار کا پھل زمین پر رکھا اور اس کی دھار اپنے دونوں پستانوں کے درمیان رکھی پھر اس نے بوجھ ڈال دیا اور خود کشی کر لی۔ تو اس پر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”آدمی جنتیوں والے کام کرتا رہتا ہے جیسا کہ لوگوں کو نظر آتا ہے یعنی ظاہری اعتبار سے حالانکہ وہ دوزخی ہوتا ہے، اور ایک دوسرا آدمی لوگوں کو نظر آنے کے اعتبار سے دوزخیوں والے کام کرتا ہے حالانکہ وہ جنتی ہوتا ہے۔“
Hazrat Sahl bin Sa'd Sa'idi (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) aur mushrikon ka aamna samna hua aur jung shuru ho gayi jab Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) apne lashkar ki taraf palte aur fareeq-e-sani apne lashkar ki taraf jhuka to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ke sathiyon mein ek aadmi tha jo dushman se alag hone wale ka ta'aqub karta aur apni talwar se is ko maut ke ghaat utar deta, logon ne kaha, aaj jis qadar is ne kaam kiya hai (Musalmanon ko fayida pohanchaya) is qadar kisi ne nafe nahi pohanchaya, to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Is ke bawajood yeh dozakhi hai." To logon mein se ek aadmi kehne laga: main har waqt is ke sath rahoon ga. To woh is ke humrah nikla, jahan woh thehrata wahin woh thehar jata aur jab woh taiz-raftari ikhtiyar karta to woh bhi taiz chal parta. Woh aadmi shadeed zakhami ho gaya is ne jald maut chahi aur is ne apni talwar ka phal zameen par rakha aur is ki dhaar apni chhati par phir apni talwar par poora wazan daal kar khud-kushi kar li, to doosra aadmi Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ke pas aaya aur arz kiya: main Aap ki risalat ki gawahi deta hoon! Aap ne pucha: "Kya sabab hai?" To is ne kaha: woh aadmi jis ke baare mein Aap ne abhi bataya tha: ke woh dozakhi hai aur logon par yeh baat garaan guzri thi to main ne logon ko kaha tha main is ke anjam ko janne ka zimma leta hoon. Main is ki talash mein nikla yahan tak ke woh shadeed zakhami ho gaya, to is ne jald maut chahi, is ke liye apni talwar ka phal zameen par rakha aur is ki dhaar apne dono pastano ke darmiyan rakhi phir is ne bojh daal diya aur khud-kushi kar li. To is par Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Aadmi jannatiyon wale kaam karta rehta hai jaisa ke logon ko nazar aata hai yaani zahiri itibar se halanke woh dozakhi hota hai, aur ek doosra aadmi logon ko nazar aane ke itibar se dozakhiyon wale kaam karta hai halanke woh jannati hota hai."
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقَارِيُّ - حَىٌّ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ - عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْتَقَى هُوَ وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ فَاقْتَتَلُوا . فَلَمَّا مَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِلَى عَسْكَرِهِ وَمَالَ الآخَرُونَ إِلَى عَسْكَرِهِمْ وَفِي أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلٌ لاَ يَدَعُ لَهُمْ شَاذَّةً إِلاَّ اتَّبَعَهَا يَضْرِبُهَا بِسَيْفِهِ فَقَالُوا مَا أَجْزَأَ مِنَّا الْيَوْمَ أَحَدٌ كَمَا أَجْزَأَ فُلاَنٌ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " أَمَا إِنَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ " . فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ أَنَا صَاحِبُهُ أَبَدًا . قَالَ فَخَرَجَ مَعَهُ كُلَّمَا وَقَفَ وَقَفَ مَعَهُ وَإِذَا أَسْرَعَ أَسْرَعَ مَعَهُ - قَالَ - فَجُرِحَ الرَّجُلُ جُرْحًا شَدِيدًا فَاسْتَعْجَلَ الْمَوْتَ فَوَضَعَ نَصْلَ سَيْفِهِ بِالأَرْضِ وَذُبَابَهُ بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَحَامَلَ عَلَى سَيْفِهِ فَقَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ فَخَرَجَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ . قَالَ " وَمَا ذَاكَ " . قَالَ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي ذَكَرْتَ آنِفًا أَنَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَأَعْظَمَ النَّاسُ ذَلِكَ فَقُلْتُ أَنَا لَكُمْ بِهِ فَخَرَجْتُ فِي طَلَبِهِ حَتَّى جُرِحَ جُرْحًا شَدِيدًا فَاسْتَعْجَلَ الْمَوْتَ فَوَضَعَ نَصْلَ سَيْفِهِ بِالأَرْضِ وَذُبَابَهُ بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَحَامَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ " إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فِيمَا يَبْدُو لِلنَّاسِ وَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ عَمَلَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فِيمَا يَبْدُو لِلنَّاسِ وَهُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ " .
