Chapter: Prohibition of Fasting for a lifetime for the one who will be harmed by that or who will neglect other duties, or does not break his fast on the two 'Ids or during the days of At-Tashriq; It is better to fast alternate days

بَاب النَّهْيِ عَنْ صَوْمِ الدَّهْرِ لِمَنْ تَضَرَّرَ بِهِ أَوْ فَوَّتَ بِهِ حَقًّا أَوْ لَمْ يُفْطِرْ الْعِيدَيْنِ وَالتَّشْرِيقَ وَبَيَانِ تَفْضِيلِ صَوْمِ يَوْمٍ وَإِفْطَارِ يَوْمٍ
Sahih Muslim 1159l
Abdullah bin Amr bin al-'As (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, ‘the best fasting in the eye of Allah is that of Dawood (عليه السَلم), for he fasted for half of the age (he fasted on alternate days), and the best prayer in the eye of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, is that of Dawood (عليه السَلم), for he slept for half of the night and then stood for prayer and then again slept. He prayed for one-third of the night after midnight. He (the narrator) said, I asked Amr bin Dinar whether Amr bin Aus said that he stood for prayer one-third of the night after midnight. He said, yes.
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اللہ تعالیٰ کو سب روزوں سے زیادہ پسند روزے داؤد علیہ السسلام ہیں۔ وہ نصف الدہر (ایک دن روزہ ایک دن ناغہ) روزے رکھتے تھے اور اللہ کو سب نمازوں سے زیادہ (رات کی نماز) داؤد علیہ السلام کی نماز پسند ہے وہ آدھی رات تک سوتے پھر (تہائی رات) قیام کرتے پھر آخر میں سو جاتے آدھی رات کے بعد تہائی رات قیام کرتے تھے۔“ ابن جریج کہتے ہیں میں نے عمرو بن دینار سے پوچھا: کیا عمرو بن اوس یہ کہتے تھے کہ وہ آدھی رات کے بعد تہائی رات قیام کرتے تھے اس نے جواب دیا ہاں۔
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (Radiallahu Anhu) bayan karte hain ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ne farmaya: "Allah Ta'ala ko sab rozon se zyada pasand rozay Dawood (Alaihissalam) hain. Woh nisfud Dahr (ek din roza ek din nagha) rozay rakhte the aur Allah ko sab namazon se zyada (raat ki namaz) Dawood (Alaihissalam) ki namaz pasand hai woh aadhi raat tak sote phir (tihai raat) qiyam karte phir akhir mein so jate aadhi raat ke baad tihai raat qiyam karte the." Ibn Juraij kehte hain maine Amr bin Dinar se poocha: "Kya Amr bin Aws yeh kehte the ke woh aadhi raat ke baad tihai raat qiyam karte the?" Usne jawab diya: "Haan."
وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو، بْنُ دِينَارٍ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ أَوْسٍ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، - رضى الله عنهما - أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " أَحَبُّ الصِّيَامِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ كَانَ يَصُومُ نِصْفَ الدَّهْرِ وَأَحَبُّ الصَّلاَةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صَلاَةُ دَاوُدَ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ - كَانَ يَرْقُدُ شَطْرَ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ ثُمَّ يَرْقُدُ آخِرَهُ يَقُومُ ثُلُثَ اللَّيْلِ بَعْدَ شَطْرِهِ " . قَالَ قُلْتُ لِعَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ أَعَمْرُو بْنُ أَوْسٍ كَانَ يَقُولُ يَقُومُ ثُلُثَ اللَّيْلِ بَعْدَ شَطْرِهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ .
