Chapter: Praying in dwellings when it is raining

باب الصَّلاَةِ فِي الرحَالِ فِي الْمَطَرِ
Sahih Muslim 699a
Abdullah bin Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that he asked the Mu'adh-dhin on a rainy day, ‘when you have announced’ I testify that there is no god but Allah; I testify that Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) is the Apostle of Allah,’ do not say, ‘come to the prayer,’ but make this announcement, ْصَلُّوا فِي بُيُوتِكُم [pray in your houses]. He (the narrator) said that the people disapproved of it. Ibn Abbas (رضي الله تعالى عنه) said, are you astonished at it? He (the Prophet ﷺ), who is better than I, did it. Jumu'a prayer is no doubt obligatory, but I do not like that I should (force you) to come out and walk in mud and slippery ground.
عبداللہ بن حارث بیان کرتے ہیں کہ ایک بارش والے دن، عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے اپنے مؤذن سے فرمایا جب تم (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللّٰہ) کہو تو (حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ) نہ کہنا (صَلُّوا فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ) کہنا، لوگوں نے گویا کہ اس کو ایک نیا کام خیال کیا تو ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے کہا، کیا تم اس پر تعجب کر رہے ہو؟ یہ کام انہوں نے کیا جو مجھ سے بہتر تھے، جمعہ پڑھنا لازم ہے، اور مجھے برا معلوم ہوا کہ میں تمہیں تنگی میں مبتلا کروں اور تم کیچڑ اور پھسلن میں چل کر آؤ۔
Abdullah bin Harith bayan karte hain ke ek barish wale din, Abdullah bin Abbas (Radiyallahu Anhuma) ne apne muazzin se farmaya jab tum (Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar Rasoolullah) kaho toh (Hayya alas Salah) na kehna (Sallu fi buyootikum) kehna, logon ne goya ke is ko ek naya kaam khayal kiya toh Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu Anhuma) ne kaha, kya tum is par t'ajub kar rahe ho? Yeh kaam unhone kiya jo mujh se behtar thay, Juma parhna lazim hai, aur mujhe bura maloom hua ke mein tumhein tangi mein mubtala karoon aur tum keecharr aur phislan mein chal kar aao.
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، صَاحِبِ الزِّيَادِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِمُؤَذِّنِهِ فِي يَوْمٍ مَطِيرٍ إِذَا قُلْتَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَلاَ تَقُلْ حَىَّ عَلَى الصَّلاَةِ قُلْ صَلُّوا فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ - قَالَ - فَكَأَنَّ النَّاسَ اسْتَنْكَرُوا ذَاكَ فَقَالَ أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ ذَا قَدْ فَعَلَ ذَا مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي إِنَّ الْجُمُعَةَ عَزْمَةٌ وَإِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُحْرِجَكُمْ فَتَمْشُوا فِي الطِّينِ وَالدَّحْضِ .
