Chapter: Clarifying that faith decreases with shortcoming in obedience, and the word Kufr may be used with regard to matters other than dsbelief in Allah, such as ingratitude for blessings and not fulfilling one's duties

باب بَيَانِ نُقْصَانِ الإِيمَانِ بِنَقْصِ الطَّاعَاتِ وَبَيَانِ إِطْلاَقِ لَفْظِ الْكُفْرِ عَلَى غَيْرِ الْكُفْرِ بِاللَّهِ كَكُفْرِ النِّعْمَةِ وَالْحُقُوقِ
Sahih Muslim 79a
It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) observed : O womenfolk, you should give charity and ask much forgiveness for I saw you in bulk among the dwellers of Hell. A wise lady among them said : Why is it, Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), that our folk is in bulk in Hell? Upon this the Prophet (صلى هللا عليه و آله وسلم) observed: You curse too much and are ungrateful to your spouses. I have seen none lacking in common sense and failing in religion but (at the same time) robbing the wisdom of the wise, besides you. Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense and with religion? He (the Prophet ﷺ) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be judged from the fact) that the evidence of two women is equal to one man, that is a proof of the lack of common sense, and you spend some nights (and days) in which you do not offer prayer and in the month of Ramadan (during the days) you do not observe fast, that is a failing in religion.
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمرؓ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اے عورتوں کی جماعت! تم صدقہ کیا کرواور زیادہ سے زیادہ استغفار کیا کرو، کیونکہ میں نے تمھاری کثیر تعداد کو دوزخ میں دیکھا ہے۔“ ان میں سے ایک عقل مند عورت نے پوچھا: اے اللہ کے رسولؐ! ہماری اکثریت دوزخ میں کیوں ہے؟ آپؐ نے فرمایا: ”تم لعنت بہت بھیجتی ہو اور خاوند کی ناشکری کرتی ہو۔ میں نے عقل و دین میں کم ہونے کے باوجود دانا و عقل مند شخص کو مغلوب کر لینے والی تم سے بڑھ کر کسی کو نہیں دیکھا۔“ اس نے پوچھا: عقل و دین میں کیا کمی ہے؟ آپؐ نے فرمایا: ”عقل میں کمی یہ ہے کہ دو عورتوں کی شہادت ایک مرد کے برابر ہے تو یہ عقل میں کمی ہوئی۔ اور وہ کئی راتیں (دن) نماز نہیں پڑھ سکتی (ماہواری کی وجہ سے) اور رمضان میں نہ روزہ رکھ سکتی ہے تو یہ دین و اطاعت کی کمی ہے۔“
Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (Radhi Allahu Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Ae aurton ki jama'at! tum sadqa kiya karo aur zyada se zyada istighfar kiya karo, kyunke main ne tumhari kaseer tadaad ko dozakh mein dekha hai." Un mein se ek aql-mand aurat ne pucha: Ae Allah ke Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam)! hamari aksariyat dozakh mein kyun hai? Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Tum la'nat bohat bhejti ho aur khawand ki na-shukri karti ho. Main ne aql-o-deen mein kam hone ke bawajood dana-o-aql-mand shakhs ko maghloob kar lene wali tum se barh kar kisi ko nahi dekha." Is ne pucha: aql-o-deen mein kya kami hai? Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) ne farmaya: "Aql mein kami yeh hai ke do aurton ki shahadat ek mard ke barabar hai to yeh aql mein kami hui. Aur woh kayi raatein (din) namaz nahi parh sakti (mahwari ki wajah se) aur Ramazan mein na roza rakh sakti hai to yeh deen-o-ita'at ki kami hai."
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحِ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ الْمِصْرِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ قَالَ " يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ تَصَدَّقْنَ وَأَكْثِرْنَ الاِسْتِغْفَارَ فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُكُنَّ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ " . فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ جَزْلَةٌ وَمَا لَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَكْثَرَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ . قَالَ " تُكْثِرْنَ اللَّعْنَ وَتَكْفُرْنَ الْعَشِيرَ وَمَا رَأَيْتُ مِنْ نَاقِصَاتِ عَقْلٍ وَدِينٍ أَغْلَبَ لِذِي لُبٍّ مِنْكُنَّ " . قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ وَالدِّينِ قَالَ " أَمَّا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ فَشَهَادَةُ امْرَأَتَيْنِ تَعْدِلُ شَهَادَةَ رَجُلٍ فَهَذَا نُقْصَانُ الْعَقْلِ وَتَمْكُثُ اللَّيَالِيَ مَا تُصَلِّي وَتُفْطِرُ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَهَذَا نُقْصَانُ الدِّينِ " .
