What the Prophet ﷺ Saw Before Prophethood

Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 36542
It is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that there was no tribe of the jinn but that they had seats for listening (to the heavenly words). He said: So when the revelation came down, the angels would hear a sound like the sound of iron being thrown on a smooth stone. He said: So when the angels heard this sound, they would fall down in prostration. They would not raise their heads until the revelation was over. Then when the revelation was over, some angels would say to other angels: What did your Lord say? So if the revelation was about a heavenly matter, the angels would say: He has spoken the truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great. And if the revelation was about an earthly matter, a hidden matter, or death, or any earthly matter, the angels would talk among themselves and say: It will be so and so. The devils would hear these things and then they would come to their friends (the soothsayers) and tell them these things. So when Allah Almighty sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the devils were pelted with stars. The first ones to know about this (falling of stars) were (the tribe of) Thaqif. So the one among them who had goats would go to his goats and slaughter a goat every day. And the one who had camels would slaughter a camel every day. So the people started to hasten among themselves. So some of them said to others: Do not do (this). If these are the guiding stars (then it is alright), otherwise this is because of some new incident. So when the people looked, the guiding stars were as they were. None of them had been thrown down. The people stopped. And Allah Almighty surrounded the jinn and they heard the Quran. So when the jinn were present (at the recitation) of the Quran, they said: Be silent. Ibn 'Abbas said: The devils went to Iblis and informed him. He said: This incident has happened in the earth. So bring me the soil of every land. When the devils brought Iblis the soil of Tihamah, he said: This new incident has happened here.
حضرت ابن عباس سے روایت ہے کہ جنات کا کوئی قبیلہ نہیں تھا مگر یہ کہ ان کے لیے (آسمانی باتیں) سُننے کے لیے نشستیں تھیں۔ فرماتے ہیں : پس جب وحی نازل ہوتی تو فرشتے ایسی آواز سنتے جیسے اس لوہے کی آواز ہوتی ہے جس کو آپ صاف پتھر پر پھینکیں۔ فرماتے ہیں : پس جب فرشتے یہ آواز سنتے تو سجدہ میں گرپڑتے۔ وحی کے نازل ہونے تک وہ اپنے سر نہ اٹھاتے۔ پھر جب وحی نازل ہو چکتی تو بعض فرشتے ، بعض فرشتوں سے کہتے۔ تمہارے رب نے کیا کہا ہے ؟ پس اگر وحی کسی آسمانی معاملہ میں ہوتی تو فرشتے کہتے۔ حق کہا ہے اور وہ ذات بلند اور بڑی ہے اور اگر وحی کسی زمینی معاملہ میں۔ غیبی امر یا موت یا کوئی بھی زمینی معاملہ، ہوتی تو فرشتے باہم گفتگو کرتے اور کہتے کہ یوں یوں ہوگا۔ ان باتوں کو شیاطین سُن لیتے اور پھر یہ باتیں اپنے اولیاء (دوستوں) کو آ کر کہتے۔ پس جب اللہ تعالیٰ نے محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) کو مبعوث فرمایا تو شیاطین کو ستاروں کے ذریعہ ہلاک کیا گیا۔ سب سے پہلے جس کو اس بات کا (ستارے گرنے کا) علم ہوا وہ (قبیلہ) ثقیف تھا۔ پس ان میں سے بکریوں والا اپنی بکریوں کے پاس جاتا اور ہر روز ایک بکری ذبح کردیتا۔ اور اونٹوں والا ہر روز ایک اونٹ ذبح کردیتا۔ پس لوگوں نے اپنے میں جلدی کرنا شروع کی ۔ تو ان میں سے بعض نے بعض سے کہا۔ (ایسا) نہ کرو۔ اگر تو یہ راہنمائی والے ستارے ہیں (تو پھر ٹھیک) وگرنہ یہ کوئی نئے حادثہ کی وجہ سے ہے۔ پس لوگوں نے دیکھا تو راہنمائی والے ستارے تو ویسے ہی تھے۔ ان میں سے کچھ بھی نہیں پھنکاک گیا تھا۔ لوگ رُک گئے۔ اور اللہ تعالیٰ نے جنات کو پھیرا اور انھوں نے قرآن کو سُنا۔ پس جب جنات (تلاوت) قرآن پر حاضر ہوئے تو انھوں نے کہا۔ خاموش ہو جاؤ۔ ابن عباس فرماتے ہیں۔ شیاطین ، ابلیس کے پاس گئے اور جا کر اس کو خبر دی اس نے کہا : زمین میں یہی واقعہ رونما ہوا ہے۔ پس تم میرے پاس ہر زمین کی مٹی لاؤ۔ شیاطین جب ابلیس کے پاس تہامہ کی مٹی لائے تو اس نے کہا ۔ یہیں پر یہ نیا واقعہ رونما ہوا ہے۔
Hazrat Ibn Abbas se riwayat hai keh jinnat ka koi qabeela nahin tha magar yeh keh un ke liye aasmani baaten sunne ke liye nishistain thin farmate hain pas jab wahi nazil hoti to farishte aisi aawaz sunte jaise us lohe ki aawaz hoti hai jis ko aap saaf pathar par phenkein farmate hain pas jab farishte yeh aawaz sunte to sijde mein gir parte wahi ke nazil hone tak wo apne sar na uthate phir jab wahi nazil ho chuki to baaz farishte baaz farishton se kehte tumhare rab ne kya kaha pas agar wahi kisi aasmani mamle mein hoti to farishte kehte haq kaha hai aur wo zaat buland aur badi hai aur agar wahi kisi zameeni mamle mein ghaibi amr ya mout ya koi bhi zameeni mamla hoti to farishte baham guftgu karte aur kehte keh yun yun hoga in baaton ko shayateen sun lete aur phir yeh baaten apne auliya doston ko aa kar kehte pas jab Allah ta'ala ne Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam ko mab'uth farmaya to shayateen ko sitaron ke zariya halak kiya gaya sab se pehle jis ko is baat ka sitare girne ka ilm hua wo qabeela thaqif tha pas un mein se bakriyon wala apni bakriyon ke paas jata aur har roz ek bakri zabah karta aur oonton wala har roz ek oont zabah karta pas logon ne apne mein jaldi karna shuru ki to un mein se baaz ne baaz se kaha aisa na karo agar to yeh rahnumai wale sitare hain to phir theek warna yeh koi naye hadsa ki wajah se hai pas logon ne dekha to rahnumai wale sitare to waise hi the un mein se kuchh bhi nahin phenka gaya tha log ruk gaye aur Allah ta'ala ne jinnat ko phera aur unhon ne quran ko suna pas jab jinnat tilawat quran par hazir hue to unhon ne kaha khamosh ho jao Ibn Abbas farmate hain shayateen iblis ke paas gaye aur ja kar us ko khabar di us ne kaha zameen mein yahi waqea ronuma hua hai pas tum mere paas har zameen ki mitti lao shayateen jab iblis ke paas tehama ki mitti laaye to us ne kaha yahin par yeh naya waqea ronuma hua hai
ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنَّهُ لَمْ تَكُنْ قَبِيلَةٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ إِلَّا ⦗ص:٣٢٨⦘ وَلَهُمْ مَقَاعِدُ لِلسَّمْعِ ، قَالَ : فَكَانَ إِذَا نَزَلَ الْوَحْيُ سَمِعَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ صَوْتًا كَصَوْتِ الْحَدِيدَةِ أَلْقَيْتَهَا عَلَى الصَّفَا ، قَالَ : فَإِذَا سَمِعَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا فَلَمْ يَرْفَعُوا رُءُوسَهُمْ حَتَّى يَنْزِلَ ، فَإِذَا نَزَلَ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ : مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ ؟ فَإِنْ كَانَ مِمَّا يَكُونُ فِي السَّمَاءِ قَالُوا : الْحَقَّ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْكَبِيرُ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مِمَّا يَكُونُ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْغَيْبِ أَوْ مَوْتٍ أَوْ شَيْءٍ مِمَّا يَكُونُ فِي الْأَرْضِ تَكَلَّمُوا بِهِ فَقَالُوا : يَكُونُ كَذَا وَكَذَا ، فَتَسْمَعُهُ الشَّيَاطِينُ فَيُنْزِلُونَهُ عَلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ ، فَلَمَّا بَعَثَ اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدًا دُحِرُوا بِالنُّجُومِ ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ عَلِمَ بِهَا ثَقِيفٌ ، فَكَانَ ذُو الْغَنَمِ مِنْهُمْ يَنْطَلِقُ إِلَى غَنَمِهِ فَيَذْبَحُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ شَاةً ، وَذُو الْإِبِلِ يَنْحَرُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ بَعِيرًا ، فَأَسْرَعَ النَّاسُ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ : لَا تَفْعَلُوا ، فَإِنْ كَانَتِ النُّجُومُ الَّتِي يَهْتَدِي بِهَا وَإِلَّا فَإِنَّهُ أَمْرٌ حَدَثَ ، فَنَظَرُوا فَإِذَا النُّجُومُ الَّتِي يَهْتَدِي بِهَا كَمَا هِيَ ، لَمْ يُرْمَ مِنْهَا بِشَيْءٍ فَكَفُّوا ، وَصَرَفَ اللَّهُ الْجِنَّ ، فَسَمِعُوا الْقُرْآنَ ، فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُوا : أَنْصِتُوا ، قَالَ : وَانْطَلَقَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ إِلَى إِبْلِيسَ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ : هَذَا حَدَثٌ حَدَثَ فِي الْأَرْضِ ، فَأْتُونِي مِنْ كُلِّ أَرْضٍ بِتُرْبَةٍ ، فَلَمَّا أَتَوْهُ بِتُرْبَةِ تِهَامَةَ قَالَ : هَاهُنَا الْحَدَثُ
