The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2023
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that a man from Banu Salim passed by some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) while driving his goats. He greeted them with Salam. They said that he only greeted us to save his own life. Saying this, they advanced towards him and killed him, and took his goats and presented themselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Upon this, the following verse was revealed: “O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah , investigate carefully." [An-Nisa: 94]

سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ بنو سلیم کا ایک آدمی اپنی بکریوں کو ہانکتے ہوئے چند صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم کے پاس سے گزرا، اس نے انہیں سلام کیا، وہ کہنے لگے کہ اس نے ہمیں سلام اس لئے کیا ہے تاکہ اپنی جان بچا لے، یہ کہہ کر وہ اس کی طرف بڑھے اور اسے قتل کر دیا، اور اس کی بکریاں لے کر نبی ﷺ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو گئے، اس پر یہ آیت نازل ہوئی: «﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا﴾ [النساء: 94] » ”اے ایمان والو! جب تم اللہ کے راستے میں نکلو تو خوب چھان بین کر لو۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Banu Saleem ka ek aadmi apni bakriyon ko hankte huye chand Sahaba Kiram (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ke paas se guzra, usne unhen salam kiya, woh kahne lage ki usne hamen salam is liye kiya hai taake apni jaan bacha le, yeh kah kar woh uski taraf badhe aur use qatal kar diya, aur uski bakriyan lekar Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ki khidmat mein hazir ho gaye, is par yeh ayat nazil hui: "Ya ayyuhal lazeena amano iza darabtutm fee sabeelillahi fatabayyanu." "Aye Imaan walo! Jab tum Allah ke raste mein niklo to khoob chhan been kar lo."
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ , حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ" مَرَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ بِنَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يَسُوقُ غَنَمًا لَهُ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالُوا: مَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا إِلَّا لِيَتَعَوَّذَ مِنَّا، فَعَمَدُوا إِلَيْهِ فَقَتَلُوهُ وَأَتَوْا بِغَنَمِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَنَزَلَتْ الْآيَةُ يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا سورة النساء آية 94".
