The Musnad of Abdullah ibn al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both)

Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 2552
Akarmah narrates that once, Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, burned some apostates to death. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, found out, he said: "If I were him, I would not have burned them with fire, because the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'Do not punish anyone with the punishment of Allah.' Rather, I would have killed them, because the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'Whoever changes his religion and becomes an apostate, then kill him.'" When this was conveyed to Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, he expressed regret (that he did not know this before).

عکرمہ کہتے ہیں کہ ایک مرتبہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کچھ مرتدین کو نذر آتش کر دیا، سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کو پتہ چلا تو فرمایا: اگر میں ہوتا تو انہیں آگ میں نہ جلاتا کیونکہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا ہے کہ ”اللہ کے عذاب جیسا عذاب کسی کو نہ دو“، بلکہ میں انہیں قتل کر دیتا کیونکہ نبی ﷺ نے فرمایا ہے کہ ”جو شخص مرتد ہو کر اپنا دین بدل لے، اسے قتل کر دو۔“ جب سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو اس بات کا علم ہوا تو انہوں نے اس پر اظہار افسوس کیا (کہ یہ بات پہلے سے معلوم کیوں نہ ہو سکی؟)۔
Ukrama kahte hain ke ek martaba Sayyiduna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ne kuch murtadeen ko nazar aatish kar diya, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a ko pata chala to farmaya: Agar main hota to unhen aag mein na jalata kyunki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya hai ke “Allah ke azab jaisa azab kisi ko na do”, balki main unhen qatl kar deta kyunki Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya hai ke “Jo shakhs murtad ho kar apna deen badal le, use qatl kar do.” Jab Sayyiduna Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ko is baat ka ilm hua to unhon ne is par izhar afsos kiya (ke yeh baat pehle se maloom kyun na ho saki?).
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا أَخَذَ نَاسًا ارْتَدُّوا عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ، فَحَرَّقَهُمْ بِالنَّارِ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ كُنْتُ أَنَا لَمْ أُحَرِّقْهُمْ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ:" لَا تُعَذِّبُوا بِعَذَابِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحَدًا" , وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" مَنْ بَدَّلَ دَيْنَهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُ" , فَبَلَغَ عَلِيًّا مَا قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَ: وَيْحَ ابْنِ أُمِّ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ.
