Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 422
Nabih bin Wahab narrates that once Umar bin Ubaidullah sent a query to Aban bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asking if a Muhrim (person in the state of Ihram) can apply kohl to his eyes. He sent back the reply, "He can apply the kohl of patience" (meaning he should be patient and not apply kohl until he is no longer in the state of Ihram) because I have heard Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding this.

نبیہ بن وہب کہتے ہیں کہ عمر بن عبیداللہ نے ایک مرتبہ سیدنا ابان بن عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ سے یہ مسئلہ دریافت کروایا کہ کیا محرم آنکھوں میں سرمہ لگا سکتا ہے؟ انہوں نے جواب میں کہلا بھیجا کہ صبر کا سرمہ لگا سکتا ہے (صبر کرے جب تک احرام نہ کھل جائے، سرمہ نہ لگائے) کیونکہ میں نے سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کو نبی ﷺ کے حوالے سے ایسی حدیث بیان کرتے ہوئے سنا ہے۔
Nabiha bin Wahab kehte hain ki Umar bin Ubaidullah ne ek martaba Sayyiduna Aban bin Usman (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se ye masla دریافت karwaya ki kya muharram aankhon mein surma laga sakta hai? Unhon ne jawab mein kehlabheja ki sabar ka surma laga sakta hai (Sabar kare jab tak ehraam na khul jaye, surma na lagaye) kyunki maine Sayyiduna Usman (رضي الله تعالى عنه) ko Nabi (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ke hawale se aisi hadees bayan karte huye suna hai.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ نُبَيْهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ: أَرْسَلَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ إِلَى أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ:" أَيُكَحِّلُ عَيْنَيْهِ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ؟ أَوْ: بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ يُكَحِّلُهُمَا وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ؟ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ: أَنْ يُضَمِّدَهُمَا بِالصَّبِرِ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ يُحَدِّثُ ذَلِكَ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ".
