Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 4488
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyidna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The month is sometimes 29 days long, so do not fast until you see the moon, and do not celebrate Eid without seeing the moon. If clouds cover the moon, then estimate its completion.” Nafi’ said: “This is why Sayyidna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), after the 29th of Sha’ban, would send someone to sight the moon. If the moon was sighted, then fine, but if the moon was not sighted and there were no clouds or dust, then they would not fast the next day. And if there were clouds or dust, they would fast.”

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے ارشاد فرمایا: ”مہینہ کبھی ۲٩ دن کا ہوتا ہے اس لئے جب تک چاند دیکھ نہ لو روزہ نہ رکھو اور چاند دیکھے بغیر عید بھی نہ مناؤ، اگر تم پر بادل چھا جائیں تو اندازہ کر لو۔“ نافع کہتے ہیں کہ اسی وجہ سے سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما شعبان کی ٢٩ تاریخ ہونے کے بعد کسی کو چاند دیکھنے کے لئے بھیجتے تھے، اگر چاند نظر آ جاتا تو ٹھیک اور اگر چاند نظر نہ آتا اور کوئی بادل یا غبار بھی نہ چھایا ہوتا تو اگلے دن روزہ نہ رکھتے اور اگر بادل یا غبارچھایا ہوا ہوتا تو روزہ رکھ لیتے تھے۔
Saidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne irshad farmaya: “Mahina kabhi 29 din ka hota hai is liye jab tak chand dekh na lo roza na rakho aur chand dekhe baghair Eid bhi na manao, agar tum par badal chha jayen to andaza kar lo.” Nafi kehte hain ki isi wajah se Saidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a Shaban ki 29 tareekh hone ke baad kisi ko chand dekhne ke liye bhejte the, agar chand nazar aa jata to theek aur agar chand nazar na aata aur koi badal ya ghibar bhi na chhaya hota to agle din roza na rakhte aur agar badal ya ghibar chhaya hua hota to roza rakh lete the.
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ، فَلَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ، وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ"، قَالَ: نَافِعٌ: فَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِذَا مَضَى مِنْ شَعْبَانَ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ يَبْعَثُ مَنْ يَنْظُرُ، فَإِنْ رُئِيَ، فَذَاكَ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يُرَ وَلَمْ يَحُلْ دُونَ مَنْظَرِهِ سَحَابٌ وَلَا قَتَرٌ، أَصْبَحَ مُفْطِرًا، وَإِنْ حَالَ دُونَ مَنْظَرِهِ سَحَابٌ أَوْ قَتَرٌ أَصْبَحَ صَائِمًا.
