Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 4492
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that a person once asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “O Messenger of Allah! What do you command us regarding the night prayer?” He said: “You should pray two rak'ahs each (and repeat it), and when you fear that dawn is approaching, then pray one rak'ah with those two. It will be sufficient as witr for all the prayers that you have offered during the night."

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ ایک مرتبہ ایک شخص نے نبی کریم ﷺ سے پوچھا: یا رسول اللہ! رات کی نماز سے متعلق آپ ہمیں کیا حکم دیتے ہیں؟ فرمایا: ”تم دو دو رکعت کر کے نماز پڑھا کرو اور جب صبح ہو جانے کا اندیشہ ہو تو ان دو کے ساتھ ایک رکعت اور ملا لو تم نے رات میں جتنی نماز پڑھی ہو گی، ان سب کی طرف سے یہ وتر کے لئے کافی ہو جائے گی۔“
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ke ek martaba ek shakhs ne Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se poocha: Ya Rasulullah! Raat ki namaz se mutalliq aap humain kya hukum dete hain? Farmaya: “Tum do do rakat kar ke namaz parha karo aur jab subah ho jaane ka andesha ho to un do ke saath ek rakat aur mila lo tum ne raat mein jitni namaz parhi ho gi, in sab ki taraf se yeh witr ke liye kafi ho jaye gi.”
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، كَيْفَ تَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نُصَلِّيَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ؟ قَالَ:" يُصَلِّي أَحَدُكُمْ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَشِيَ الصُّبْحَ، صَلَّى وَاحِدَةً، فَأَوْتَرَتْ لَهُ مَا قَدْ صَلَّى مِنَ اللَّيْلِ".
