Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 6286
It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would go out on the day of Eid, a spear would be fixed in front of him on his order, and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would lead the prayer making it a sutrah (prayer barrier), and the people would be behind him. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would do this while traveling as well. The rulers have adopted this practice from here.

سیدنا ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے مروی ہے کہ نبی کریم ﷺ جب عید کے دن نکلتے تو ان کے حکم پر ان کے سامنے نیزہ گاڑ دیا جاتا تھا اور نبی کریم ﷺ اسے سترہ بنا کر نماز پڑھاتے تھے اور لوگ ان کے پیچھے ہوتے تھے نبی کریم ﷺ اس طرح سفر میں کرتے تھے یہاں سے اسے حکمرانوں نے لیا ہے۔
Sayyidna Ibn Umar ( (رضي الله تعالى عنه) a se marvi hai ki Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) jab Eid ke din nikalte to un ke hukum par un ke samne neza gaad diya jata tha aur Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ise satrah bana kar namaz parhate the aur log un ke peeche hote the Nabi Kareem (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) is tarah safar mein karte the yahan se ise hukmaranon ne liya hai.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ , أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:" كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ يَوْمَ الْعِيدِ يَأْمُرُ بِالْحَرْبَةِ، فَتُوضَعُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَيُصَلِّي إِلَيْهَا، وَالنَّاسُ وَرَاءَهُ، وَكَانَ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ فِي السَّفَرِ، فَمِنْ ثَمَّ اتَّخَذَهَا الْأُمَرَاءُ".
