Chapter on giving to the worker in alms a livelihood for his work.

بَابُ إِعْطَاءِ الْعَامِلِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ مِنْهَا رِزْقًا لِعَمَلِهِ،

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2364

Sayyiduna Ibn al-Sa'di al-Maliki, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, appointed me as a collector of Zakat. When I finished collecting the Zakat and handed over the wealth to him, he ordered to give me wages. I said, "Indeed, I did this work for the sake of Allah, and my reward is with Allah Almighty." So Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "Take the wealth that I am giving you, because I did this same work during the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and you gave me wages, so I also said the same thing as you. Upon this, Allah's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: 'When you are given something without asking, then eat it and give some in charity.'" Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that in my opinion, Ibn al-Sa'di al-Maliki refers to Abdullah ibn Sa'd Abi Sarah.

سیدنا ابن الساعدی المالکی رضی اللہ عنہ فرماتے ہیں کہ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے مجھے زکوٰۃ کی وصولی پر عامل کیا۔ جب میں زکوٰۃ کی وصولی سے فارغ ہوگیا اور میں نے مال اُن کے حوالے کردیا تو اُنہوں نے مجھے اجرت دینے کا حُکم دیا تو میں نے عرض کی کہ بیشک میں نے یہ کام اللّٰہ کی رضا کے لئے کیا ہے اور میری اجرت اللّٰہ تعالیٰ ہی کے ذمے ہے۔ تو سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا، میں تمہیں جو مال دے رہا ہوں، وہ لے لو کیونکہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے عہد مبارک میں یہی کام انجام دیا تھا تو آپ نے مجھے مزدوری دی تھی تو میں نے بھی تمہاری بات کی طرح اظہار کیا تھا۔ اس پر اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھ سے فرمایا تھا: ”جب تمہیں کوئی چیز بغیر مانگے مل جائے تو کھاؤ اور صدقہ کردو۔“ امام ابوبکر رحمه الله فرماتے ہیں کہ میرے خیال میں ابن الساعدی المالکی سے مراد عبداللہ بن سعد ابی سرح ہے۔

Sayyidina Ibn us Saadi al Maliki razi Allah anhu farmate hain ke Sayyidina Umar razi Allah anhu ne mujhe zakat ki vasool par aamil kiya. Jab main zakat ki vasool se farigh hogaya aur maine maal unke hawale kardiya to unhon ne mujhe ujrat dene ka hukm diya to maine arz ki ke beshak maine ye kaam Allah ki raza ke liye kiya hai aur meri ujrat Allah ta'ala hi ke zimme hai. To Sayyidina Umar razi Allah anhu ne farmaya, main tumhen jo maal de raha hun, woh le lo kyunki maine Rasul Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam ke ahd mubarak mein yahi kaam anjaam diya tha to aap ne mujhe mazdoori di thi to maine bhi tumhari baat ki tarah izhaar kiya tha. Is par Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam ne mujh se farmaya tha: “Jab tumhen koi cheez baghair mange mil jaye to khao aur sadqa kardo.” Imam Abu Bakr rahmatullah alaih farmate hain ke mere khayal mein Ibn us Saadi al Maliki se murad Abdullah bin Saad Abi Sarh hai.

حَدَّثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْمُرَادِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ ، عَنْ بُكَيْرٍ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ السَّاعِدِيِّ الْمَالِكِيِّ ، قَالَ: اسْتَعْمَلَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْتُ مِنْهَا، وَأَدَّيْتُهَا إِلَيْهِ أَمَرَ لِي بِعُمَالَةٍ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّمَا عَمِلْتُ لِلَّهِ، وَأَجْرِي عَلَى اللَّهِ، فَقَالَ: خُذْ مَا أَعْطَيْتُكَ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ عَمِلْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَعَمَّلَنِي، فَقُلْتُ: مِثْلَ قَوْلِكَ، فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِذَا أُعْطِيتَ شَيْئًا مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ تَسْأَلَ، فَكُلْ وَتَصَدَّقَ" ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ: ابْنُ السَّاعِدِيِّ الْمَالِكِيُّ: أَحْسِبُهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2365

Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi Sarh narrated that he went to Umar bin Al-Khattab, during his Caliphate, and Umar said to him, "Wasn't I informed that you provide services to the people, but when you are offered wages for it, you dislike taking it?" I replied, "Yes." Umar said, "Why don't you accept the wages?" I said, "I have horses and slaves, and I am blessed with abundance, so I want this work of mine to be a Sadaqah (charity) for the Muslims." Umar said, "Don't do that. I intended to do the same as you, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to give me some wealth. I would say, 'Give it to someone more needy than me.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Take it, strengthen yourself with it, or give it in charity. Accept whatever comes to you without begging or being covetous, and do not let your heart desire what you do not receive.'"

جناب عبداللہ بن سعد بن ابی سرح بیان کرتے ہیں کہ وہ سیدنا عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کے دورخلافت میں سیدنا عمررضی اللہ عنہ کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے تو سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے ان سے کہا، کیا مجھے یہ نہیں بتایا گیا کہ تم عوامی خدمت کے کام سر انجام دیتے ہو، پھر جب تمہیں مزدوری دی جاتی ہے تو تم اسے لینا پسند نہیں کرتے؟ تو میں نے جواب دیا کہ کیوں نہیں (میں ایسے ہی کرتا ہوں) سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا، آخر تم مزدوری کیوں نہیں لیتے؟ میں نے عرض کی کہ میرے پاس گھوڑے ہیں اور غلام بھی موجود ہیں اور میں خیر و برکت سے مالا مال ہوں اس لئے میں چاہتا ہوں کہ میرا یہ عمل مسلمانوں پر صدقہ ہوجائے تو سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا، تم ایسے مت کیا کرو کیونکہ میں نے بھی ایسے ہی کرنا چاہا تھا جیسے تم چاہتے ہو تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مجھے مال عطا کر دیتے تھے۔ میں عرض کرتا کہ آپ مجھ سے زیادہ ضرورتمند کو دے دیں تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”لے لو، اس سے قوت حاصل کرو یا صدقہ کردو اور جو مال تجھے بغیر حرص اور سوال کے مل جائے اسے لے لو اور جو مال تمہیں نہ ملے اس کی طرف اپنا دل مت لگاؤ (اس کا لالچ نہ کرو)۔“

Janab Abdullah bin Saad bin Abi Sarh bayan karte hain ki woh Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab Radi Allahu Anhu ke dor e khilafat mein Sayyiduna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ki khidmat mein hazir huye to Sayyiduna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne un se kaha, kya mujhe ye nahi bataya gaya ki tum awami khidmat ke kaam sar anjam dete ho, phir jab tumhein mazdoori di jati hai to tum usay lena pasand nahi karte? To maine jawab diya ki kyun nahi (mein aise hi karta hun) Sayyiduna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne farmaya, aakhir tum mazdoori kyun nahi lete? Maine arz ki ki mere paas ghore hain aur ghulam bhi mojood hain aur mein khair o barkat se mala mal hun is liye mein chahta hun ki mera ye amal Musalmanon per sadaqa ho jaye to Sayyiduna Umar Radi Allahu Anhu ne farmaya, tum aise mat kya karo kyunki maine bhi aise hi karna chaha tha jaise tum chahte ho to Rasul Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam mujhe maal ata kar dete thay. Mein arz karta ki aap mujh se ziada zarurattmand ko de dein to Rasul Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ne farmaya: "Le lo, is se quwwat hasil karo ya sadaqa kar do aur jo maal tujhe baghair haris aur sawal ke mil jaye usay le lo aur jo maal tumhein na mile us ki taraf apna dil mat lagao (us ka lalach na karo)."

قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُزَيْرٍ الأَيْلِيُّ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَنَّ سَلامَةَ بْنَ رَوْحٍ ، حَدَّثَهُمْ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي السَّائِبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، أَنَّ حُوَيْطِبَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ قَدِمَ عَلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي خِلافَتِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: أَلَمْ أُحَدِّثْ إِنَّكَ تَلِي مِنْ أَعْمَالِ النَّاسِ عَمَلا، فَإِذَا أُعْطِيتَ الْعُمَالَةَ كَرِهْتَهَا؟ فَقُلْتُ: بَلَى، قَالَ عُمَرُ: فَمَا أَنْزَلَكَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ؟ قُلْتُ: لِي أَفْرَاسٌ وَأَعْبُدٌ، وَأَنَا بِخَيْرٍ، فَأُرِيدُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَمَلِي صَدَقَةٌ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: فَلا تَفْعَلْ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَدْتُ الَّذِي أَرَدْتَ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعْطِينِي الْعَطَاءَ، فَأَقُولُ أَعْطِهِ أَفْقَرَ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " خُذْ فَتَقَوَّ بِهِ، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْ، وَمَا جَاءَكَ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ، وَأَنْتَ غَيْرُ مُشْرِفٍ، وَلا سَائِلٍ فَخُذْهُ، وَمَا لا فَلا تُتْبِعْهُ نَفْسَكَ"

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2366

It is narrated on the authority of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave some wealth to Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Give this wealth to someone more needy than me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Take it and make it a means of wealth for yourself or give it in charity." Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith.

سیدنا عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سیدنا عمر ابن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کو مال عطا فرماتے تو سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ عرض کرتے کہ آپ یہ مال مجھ سے زیادہ ضرورتمند کودے دیں۔ تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”لے لو اور اسے اپنے لئے مالداری کا سبب بنالو یا صدقہ کردو“ پھر بقیہ حدیث بیان کی۔

Sayyidina Abdullah bin Umar razi Allah anhuma se riwayat hai ki Rasul Allah sallallahu alaihi wasallam Sayyidina Umar Ibn Khattab razi Allah anhu ko mal ata farmate to Sayyidina Umar razi Allah anhu arz karte ki aap yeh mal mujhse ziyada zarurtamnd ko de dein. To aap sallallahu alaihi wasallam ne farmaya: "Le lo aur ise apne liye maldari ka sabab bana lo ya sadqah kar do" phir baqiya hadees bayan ki.

وَحَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُعْطِي ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، فَيَقُولُ عُمَرُ: أَعْطِهِ أَفْقَرَ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي، فَقَالَ:" خُذْهُ فَتَمَوَّلْهُ، أَوْ تَصَدَّقْ" ، وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ عَمْرٌو: وَحَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ حُوَيْطِبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ السَّعْدِيِّ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
