Chapter on dragging a man's garment

‌بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي إِسْبَالِ الرَّجُلِ ثَوْبَهُ

Muwatta Imam Malik 1627

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A person who drags his garment in arrogance will not be looked at by Allah on the Day of Rising."


Grade: Sahih

حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ بے شک رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا :’’ وہ شخص جو اپنا کپڑا تکبر کی وجہ سے گھسیٹتا ہے اللہ تعالیٰ قیامت کے دن اس کی طرف ( رحمت کی نظر سے ) نہیں دیکھے گا ۔‘‘

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar Radi Allaho Anhu se riwayat hai ki be shak Rasul Allah Sallallaho Alaihi Wasallam ne farmaya: "Woh shakhs jo apna kapra takabbur ki wajah se ghaseetta hai Allah Ta'ala qayamat ke din uski taraf ( rehmat ki nazar se ) nahin dekhega."

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ : « الَّذِي يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ خُيَلَاءَ ، لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ »

Muwatta Imam Malik 1628

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "On the Day of Rising, Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, will not look at a person who drags his lower garment in arrogance."


Grade: Sahih

حضرت ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ یقیناً رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا :’’ اللہ تعالیٰ قیامت کے دن اس شخص کی طرف رحمت سے نہ دیکھے گا جو تکبر کرتے ہوئے اپنا ازار گھسیٹے ۔‘‘

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se riwayat hai ki yaqeenan Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Allah Ta'ala qayamat ke din us shakhs ki taraf rehmat se na dekhega jo takabbur karte hue apna izaar ghasite.

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ ،، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ : « لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ ﵎ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَى مَنْ يَجُرُّ إِزَارَهُ بَطَرًا »

Muwatta Imam Malik 1629

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi and Abdullah ibn Dinar and Zayd ibn Aslam that all of them informed him from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "On the Day of Rising, Allah will not look at a person who drags his garment in arrogance."


Grade: Sahih

حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ بلاشبہ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے فرمایا :’’ اللہ تعالیٰ قیامت کے دن اس شخص کی طرف نظر کرم نہ فرمائے گا جو اپنے کپڑے کو تکبر سے گھسیٹتا ہے ۔‘‘

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se riwayat hai ki bila shuba Rasool Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) ne farmaya: Allah Ta'ala qayamat ke din us shakhs ki taraf nazar karam na farmaye ga jo apne kapre ko takabbur se ghisatta hai.

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، وَزَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ ، كُلُّهُمْ يُخْبِرُهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ : « لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَى مَنْ يَجُرُّ ثَوْبَهُ خُيَلَاءَ »

Muwatta Imam Malik 1630

Yahya related to me from Malik from al Ala ibn Abd ar-Rahman that his father said, "I asked Abu Said al-Khudri about the lower garment. He said that he would inform me with knowledge and that he had heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'The lower garment of the mumin should reach to the middle of his calves. There is no harm in what is between that and the ankles. What is lower than that is in the Fire. What is lower than that is in the Fire. On the Day of Rising, Allah will not look at a person who trails his lower garment in arrogance.' "

علاء بن عبدالرحمن رحمہ اللہ اپنے والد ( عبدالرحمن بن یعقوب رحمہ اللہ ) سے روایت کرتے ہیں ، کہتے ہیں : میں نے حضرت ابوسعید خدری رضی اللہ عنہ سے ازار ( تہبند ) کے متعلق پوچھا تو وہ کہنے لگے : میں تمھیں علم ( نصِ حدیث ) کے ساتھ خبر دیتا ہوں ( نہ کہ کسی اجتہاد سے ) ، میں نے رسول اللہ ﷺ سے سنا ، آپ ﷺ فرما رہے تھے :’’ مومن کا ازار اس کی دونوں پنڈلیوں کے نصف تک ہے ، اس پر اس ( نصف پنڈلی ) اور ٹخنوں کے درمیان درمیان ( تہبند رکھنے میں ) کوئی گناہ نہیں ہے ، اس سے جو نیچے ہو گا وہ ( اور اس کے بقدر پاؤں ) آگ میں ہو گا ۔ اللہ تعالیٰ روز قیامت اس شخص کی طرف نظر بھی نہ فرمائے گا جس نے تکبر سے اپنا تہبند گھسیٹا ۔‘‘

Ala bin Abdurrahman rahimahullah apne walid (Abdurrahman bin Yaqub rahimahullah) se riwayat karte hain, kehte hain: Main ne Hazrat Abusaeed Khudri (رضي الله تعالى عنه) se izaar (tehband) ke mutalliq poocha to wo kehne lage: Main tumhen ilm (nasi hadees) ke saath khabar deta hun (na ke kisi ijtihad se), main ne Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) se suna, Aap (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) farma rahe the: ''Momin ka izaar uski donon pindliyon ke nisf tak hai, is par is (nisf pindli) aur takhnon ke darmiyaan darmiyaan (tehband rakhne mein) koi gunah nahin hai, is se jo neeche ho ga wo (aur uske baqadr paaon) aag mein ho ga. Allah ta'ala roz qayamat is shaks ki taraf nazar bhi na farmaye ga jis ne takabbur se apna tehband ghaseta.''

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ عَنِ الْإِزَارِ ، فَقَالَ : أَنَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِعِلْمٍ ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ : « إِزْرَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ ⦗ص:٩١٥⦘ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ سَاقَيْهِ ، لَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ فِيمَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ ، مَا أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَفِي النَّارِ ، مَا أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَفِي النَّارِ ، لَا يَنْظُرُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَى مَنْ جَرَّ إِزَارَهُ بَطَرًا »
