Chapter: The evidence for those who say that “the middle prayer” is the `Asr prayer

باب الدَّلِيلِ لِمَنْ قَالَ الصَّلاَةُ الْوُسْطَى هِيَ صَلاَةُ الْعَصْرِ
Sahih Muslim 627c
Ali (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, ‘on the day (of the battle) of Ahzab we were diverted from the middle prayer, till the sun set. May Allah fill their graves or their houses, or their stomachs with fire. The narrator is in doubt about ‘houses’ and ‘stomachs.’
حضرت علی رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے غزوہ احزاب کے وقت فرمایا: ”انہوں نے ہمیں درمیانی نماز سے مشغول رکھا، حتیٰ کہ سورج غروب ہو گیا، اللہ تعالیٰ ان کی قبروں کو یا گھروں کو یا پیٹوں کو آگ سے بھر دے (گھروں اور پیٹوں کے بارے میں شعبہ کو شبہ لاحق ہوا)
Hazrat Ali (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne Ghazwa-e-Ahzab ke waqt farmaya: ‘unhon ne hamein darmiyani namaz se mashghool rakkha, hatta ke sooraj ghuroob ho gaya, Allah Ta'ala un ki qabron ko ya gharon ko ya peiton ko aag se bhar de (gharon aur peiton ke baare mein Shuba ko shuba lahaq hua).
This Hadith has been narrated by Qatada with the same chain of transmitters; and he said, their houses and their graves (be filled with fire), and did not express doubt over the words, ‘houses’ and ‘graves’.
امام صاحب ایک اور استاد سے مذکورہ بالا روایت بیان کرتے ہیں جس میں بغیر شک کے بُیُوْتَھُم وَ قُبُوْرَهُم (ان کے گھروں اور قبروں کو) آیا ہے۔
Imam Sahab ek aur ustad se mazkoora bala riwayat bayan karte hain jis mein baghair shakk ke BUYUTAHUM WA QUBURAHUM (un ke gharon aur qabron ko) aaya hai.
Yahya narrated that he heard Ali (عليه السالم) saying that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى ہللا عليه و آلهوسلم) said on the day (of the Battle) of Ahzab, while sitting in one of the openings of the ditch, they (the enemies) have diverted us from the middle prayer till the sun set. May Allah fill their graves and their houses with fire, or their graves and stomachs with fire.
Yahya heard 'Ali saying that the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said on the day (of the Battle) of Ahzab, while sitting in one of the openings of the ditch:
They (the enemies) have diverted us from the middle prayer till the sun set. May Allah fill their graves and their houses with fire, or their graves and stomachs with fire.
Yahya heard 'Ali saying that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said on the day (of the Battle) of Ahzab, while sitting in one of the openings of the ditch: They (the enemies) have diverted us from the middle prayer till the sun set. May Allah fill their graves and their houses with fire, or their graves and stomachs with fire.
'Ali reported:The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said on the day (of the Battle) of Ahzab: They diverted us from saying the middle prayer, i. e. the 'Asr prayer. May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire; he then observed this prayer between the evening prayer and the night prayer.
حضرت علی رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے احزاب کے دن فرمایا: ”انہوں نے ہمیں درمیانی نماز عصر کی نماز سے مشغول رکھا، اللہ تعالیٰ ان کے گھروں اور قبروں کو آگ سے بھر دے“، پھر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے دونوں رات کی نمازوں مغرب اور عشاء کے درمیان پڑھا۔
Hazrat Ali (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se riwayat hai ke Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne Ahzab ke din farmaya: ‘unhon ne hamein darmiyani namaz asr ki namaz se mashghool rakkha, Allah Ta'ala un ke gharon aur qabron ko aag se bhar de’, phir Aap (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne usay dono raat ki namazon maghrib aur isha ke darmiyan parha.
Abdullah bin Mas'ud (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that the polytheists detained the Apostle of Allah (ﷺs) from observing Asr prayer till the sun became red or it became yellow. Upon this the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said, they have diverted us from (offering) the middle prayer, the 'Asr prayer. May Allah fill their bellies and their graves with fire, or he said, may Allah stuff their bellies and their graves with fire.
حضرت عبداللہ رضی اللہ تعالی عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ مشرکوں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو عصر کی نماز سے مشغول رکھا، یہاں تک کہ سورج سرخ یا زرد ہو گیا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”انہوں نے ہمیں درمیانی نماز عصر کی نماز سے مشغول رکھا، اللہ تعالیٰ ان کے پیٹوں اور قبروں کو آگ سے بھر دے“، یا فرمایا: مَلَأَ اللهُ کی بجائے حَشَا اللہُ أَجْوَافَهُمْ، وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا فرمایا۔ مَلَا اور حَشَا دونوں کا معنی بھرنا ہے، اجواف اور بطون پیٹوں کو کہتے ہیں۔
Hazrat Abdullah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se riwayat hai ke mushrikon ne Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ko asr ki namaz se mashghool rakkha, yahan tak ke sooraj surkh ya zard ho gaya to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne farmaya: ‘unhon ne hamein darmiyani namaz asr ki namaz se mashghool rakkha, Allah Ta'ala un ke peiton aur qabron ko aag se bhar de’, ya farmaya: MALA-ALLAHU ki bajaye HASHA-ALLAHU AJWAFAHUM, WA QUBURAHUM NARAN farmaya. MALA aur HASHA dono ka maani bharna hai, ajwaf aur buton peiton ko kehte hain.
وَحَدَّثَنَا عَوْنُ بْنُ سَلاَّمٍ الْكُوفِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ الْيَامِيُّ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ حَبَسَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنْ صَلاَةِ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتِ الشَّمْسُ أَوِ اصْفَرَّتْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلاَةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلاَةِ الْعَصْرِ مَلأَ اللَّهُ أَجْوَافَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا " . أَوْ قَالَ " حَشَا اللَّهُ أَجْوَافَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا " .
Sahih Muslim 629
Abu Yunus, the freed slave of 'A'isha said:'A'isha ordered me to transcribe a copy of the Qur'an for her and said: When you reach this verse:" Guard the prayers and the middle prayer" (ii. 238), inform me; so when I reached it, I informed her and she gave me dictation (like this): Guard the prayers and the middle prayer and the afternoon prayer, and stand up truly obedient to Allah. 'A'isha said: This is how I have heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
حضرت عائشہ ؓ کے آزاد کردہ غلام ابو یونس کی روایت ہے کہ مجھے عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے اپنے لیے قرآن مجید لکھنے کا حکم دیا اور فرمایا: جب تم اس آیت ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ (بقرہ: ۲۳۸) ”نمازوں کی نگہداشت کرو، خاص کر درمیانی نماز کی“ تو مجھے اطلاع کرنا، تو جب میں اس آیت پر پہنچا تو انہیں آگاہ کیا تو انہوں نے مجھے لکھوایا، ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ، ﴿وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ (البقرة: 238) ”نمازوں کا اہتمام و حفاظت کرو، خاص کر درمیانی نماز یعنی عصر کی نماز کا اور اللہ کے حضور عاجزانہ انداز سے کھڑے ہو۔ حضرت عائشہ ؓ نے بتایا میں نے اسے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے ایسی ہی سنا ہے۔
Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) ke azad karda ghulam Abu Yunus ki riwayat hai ke mujhe Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) ne apne liye Quran Majeed likhne ka hukm diya aur farmaya: jab tum is ayat HAFIZU ALAS SALAWATI WAS-SALATIL WUSTA (Baqarah: 238) ‘namazon ki nigahdasht karo, khaas kar darmiyani namaz ki’ to mujhe ittela karna, to jab main is ayat par pahuncha to unhein aagah kiya to unhon ne mujhe likhwaya, HAFIZU ALAS SALAWATI WAS-SALATIL WUSTA WA SALATIL ASR, WA QUMU LILLAHI QANITINA (Baqarah: 238) ‘namazon ka ihtimam o hifazat karo, khaas kar darmiyani namaz yani asr ki namaz ka aur Allah ke huzoor ajizana andaz se khare ho. Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) ne bataya main ne usay Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) se aisi hi suna hai.
Bara bin 'Azib (رضي الله تعالى عنه) narrated that this verse was revealed (in this way) - [Guard the prayers and the Asr prayer.] We recited it (in this very way) so long as Allah desired. Allah, then, abrogated it and it was revealed, [Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer]. A person who was sitting with Shaqiq (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said, now it implies the Asr prayer. Upon this al-Bara said, ‘I have already informed you how this (verse) was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best’.
حضرت براء بن عازب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ یہ آیت ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ،﴾ نازل ہوئی، جب تک اللہ کو منظور ہوا، ہم نے اس طرح پڑھا، پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس کو تبدیل کر دیا اور آیت اس طرح اتری: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾(البقرة: 238) تو ایک انسان جو شقیق کے پاس بیٹھا ہوا تھا۔ اس نے ان سے پوچھا: تو پھر اس سے مراد، عصر کی نماز ہے۔ تو حضرت براء رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے جواب دیا: میں تمہیں بتا چکا ہوں، آیت کیسےاتری اور اللہ تعالیٰ نے کیسے اسے تبدیل کیا۔ اصل حقیقت اللہ ہی خوب جانتا ہے۔
Hazrat Bara bin Azib (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) se riwayat hai ke yeh ayat HAFIZU ALAS SALAWATI WA SALATIL ASR nazil hui, jab tak Allah ko manzoor hua, hum ne is tarah parha, phir Allah Ta'ala ne is ko tabdeel kar diya aur ayat is tarah utri: HAFIZU ALAS SALAWATI WAS-SALATIL WUSTA (Baqarah: 238) to ek insan jo Shaqeeq ke paas baitha hua tha. Us ne un se pucha: to phir is se murad, asr ki namaz hai. To Hazrat Bara bin Azib (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) ne jawab diya: main tumhein bata chuka hoon, ayat kaise utri aur Allah Ta'ala ne kaise isay tabdeel kiya. Asal haqiqat Allah hi khoob jaanta hai.
Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that Umar b. al-Khattab had been cursing the pagans of the Quraish an the day (of the Battle) of Khandaq (Ditch). (He came to the Holy Prophet) and said:Messenger of Allah, by God, I could not say. the 'Asr prayer till the sun set. Upon this the Messenger (ﷺ) said: By Allah I, too, have not observed it. So we went to a valley. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed ablution and we too performed ablution, and then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said the 'Asr prayer after the sun had set. and then said the evening prayer after it.
حضرت جابر بن عبداللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ خندق کے روز حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ قریشی کافروں کو برا بھلا کہنے لگے اور عرض کیا، اے اللہ کے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! اللہ کی قسم! میں عصر کی نماز نہیں پڑھ سکا حتیٰ کہ سورج غروب ہونے کو ہے تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”تو اللہ کی قسم! میں نے بھی نہیں پڑھی۔“ پھر ہم وادی بطحان میں اترے، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وضو کیا اور ہم نے بھی وضو کیا تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے سورج کے غروب ہو جانے کے بعد عصر کی نماز پڑھی پھر اس کے بعد مغرب کی نماز ادا کی۔
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhuma) se riwayat hai ke Khandaq ke roz Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) Qurayshi kafiron ko bura bhala kehne lage aur arz kiya, Aye Allah ke Rasool (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)! Allah ki qasam! main asr ki namaz nahi parh saka hatta ke sooraj ghuroob hone ko hai to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne farmaya: ‘to Allah ki qasam! main ne bhi nahi parhi.’ Phir hum wadi-e-Buthan mein utre, Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne wudu kiya aur hum ne bhi wudu kiya to Rasool Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) ne sooraj ke ghuroob ho jaane ke baad asr ki namaz parhi phir is ke baad maghrib ki namaz ada ki.
وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، - قَالَ أَبُو غَسَّانَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، - حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ جَعَلَ يَسُبُّ كُفَّارَ قُرَيْشٍ وَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ مَا كِدْتُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ الْعَصْرَ حَتَّى كَادَتْ أَنْ تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " فَوَاللَّهِ إِنْ صَلَّيْتُهَا " . فَنَزَلْنَا إِلَى بُطْحَانَ فَتَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَتَوَضَّأْنَا فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْعَصْرَ بَعْدَ مَا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا الْمَغْرِبَ .
Sahih Muslim 631b
This Hadith has been reported by Yahya bin Abi Kathir with the same chain of transmitters.
امام صاحب دو اور اساتذہ سے مذکورہ بالا روایت بیان کرتے ہیں۔
Imam Sahab do aur asatiza se mazkoora bala riwayat bayan karte hain.
