Sahih Muslim 761b
Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضي الله تعالى عنها) narrated that the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) came out during the night and observed prayer in the mosque and some of the people prayed along with him. When it was morning the people talked about this and so a large number of people gathered there. The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) went out for the second night, and they (the people) prayed along with him. When it was morning the people began to talk about it. So, the mosque thronged with people on the third night. He (the Prophet ﷺ) came out and they prayed along with him. When it was the fourth night, the mosque was filled to its utmost capacity but the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) did not come out. Some persons among then cried, ‘prayer’. But the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) did not come to them till he came out for the morning prayer. When he had completed the morning prayer, he turned his face to the people and recited Tashah-hud (I bear testimony that there is no god but Allah and I bear testimony that Muhammad ﷺ is His Apostle) and then said, your affair was not hidden from me in the night, but I was afraid that (my observing prayer continuously) might make the Taraweeh prayer obligatory for you and you might be unable to perform it.
حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا بیان فرماتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رات کو نکلے اور مسجد میں نماز پڑھنی شروع کی، کچھ لوگوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اقتداء میں پڑھی، صبح ہوئی تو لوگوں نے اس کا چرچا کیا، اور لوگ پہلے سے زیادہ جمع ہو گئے، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم د وسری رات نکلے اور لوگوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی اقتداء میں نماز پڑھی، صبح ہوئی تو لوگوں نے اس کا تذکرہ کیا، تیسری رات لوگ مسجد میں زیادہ جمع ہو گئے، تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نکلے اور انہوں نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی کی اقتداء کی، جب چوتھی رات آئی تو مسجد نمازیوں کے لئے تنگ ہو گئی، اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نکل کر ان کے پاس تشریف نہ لائے ان میں سے کچھ لوگ نماز کی صدا بلند کرنے لگے لیکن رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ان کے پاس تشریف نہ لائے حتیٰ صبح کی نماز کے لئے تشریف لائے۔ جب صبح کی نماز سے فارغ ہوئے تو لوگوں کی طرف متوجہ ہوئے، پھر خطبہ پڑھ کر فرمایا: ”حمد وصلاۃ کے بعد! واقعہ یہ ہے کہ آج رات تمہارا معاملہ مجھ پر مخفی نہ تھا لیکن مجھے یہ خدشہ پیدا ہو گیا کہ رات کی نماز تم پر فرض نہ کر دی جائے پھر تم اس سے عاجز آجاؤ۔“
Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anha) bayan farmati hain ke Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) raat ko nikle aur masjid mein namaz parhni shuru ki, kuch logon ne Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ki iqtida mein parhi, subah hui to logon ne is ka charcha kiya, aur log pehle se zyada jama ho gaye, to Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) dusri raat nikle aur logon ne Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ki iqtida mein namaz parhi, subah hui to logon ne is ka tazkira kiya, teesri raat log masjid mein zyada jama ho gaye, to Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) nikle aur unhon ne Aap (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) ki iqtida ki, jab chauthi raat aayi to masjid namaziyon ke liye tang ho gayi, aur Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) nikal kar un ke paas tashreef na laye un mein se kuch log namaz ki sada buland karne lage lekin Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) un ke paas tashreef na laye hatta ke subah ki namaz ke liye tashreef laye. Jab subah ki namaz se farigh hue to logon ki taraf mutawajja hue, phir khutba parh kar farmaya: "Hamd-o-salat ke baad! Waqia ye hai ke aaj raat tumhara muamala mujh par makhfi na tha lekin mujhe ye khadsha paida ho gaya ke raat ki namaz tum par farz na kar di jaye phir tum is se aajiz aa jao."
وَحَدَّثَنِي حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ، أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَرَجَ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ فَصَلَّى فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّى رِجَالٌ بِصَلاَتِهِ فَأَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بِذَلِكَ فَاجْتَمَعَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُمْ فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي اللَّيْلَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلاَتِهِ فَأَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَذْكُرُونَ ذَلِكَ فَكَثُرَ أَهْلُ الْمَسْجِدِ مِنَ اللَّيْلَةِ الثَّالِثَةِ فَخَرَجَ فَصَلَّوْا بِصَلاَتِهِ فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ اللَّيْلَةُ الرَّابِعَةُ عَجَزَ الْمَسْجِدُ عَنْ أَهْلِهِ فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَطَفِقَ رِجَالٌ مِنْهُمْ يَقُولُونَ الصَّلاَةَ . فَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ إِلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حَتَّى خَرَجَ لِصَلاَةِ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الْفَجْرَ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ ثُمَّ تَشَهَّدَ فَقَالَ " أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَخْفَ عَلَىَّ شَأْنُكُمُ اللَّيْلَةَ وَلَكِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَنْ تُفْرَضَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَلاَةُ اللَّيْلِ فَتَعْجِزُوا عَنْهَا " .
