Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach us the prayer of Istikharah (seeking guidance from Allah), just as he would teach us a Surah of the Quran. He (the Prophet) said: “When any one of you intends to do any work, then he should pray two Rak'ah of Nafl prayer and then say: “O Allah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For You have power and I am powerless, You have knowledge and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter (name the matter) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and in my Hereafter - then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, and then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter (name the matter) is not good for me in my religion, my livelihood and in my Hereafter - then keep it away from me and keep me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”

Sayyidina Abdullah bin Masood (رضي الله تعالى عنه) kahte hain: Rasul Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) hamen Quran ki Surah ki tarah Istikhara sikhaya karte the, kahte: “Jab tum mein se koi kisi kaam ka irada kare to yun kahe: «Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlikal azeem, fa innaka taqdiru wala aqdir, wa ta'lamu wala a'lam, wa anta allamu al-ghuyoob, Allahumma in kana haza al-amru khairal li fi deeni wa dunyaya wa aqeebati amri faqdurhu li, wa in kana ghairu zalika khairun fasahhil li al-khaira haisu kana wa asrif anni ash-sharra haisu kana, wa radhini bi qadha'ika.» “.
