What they said about how long an apostate should be given to repent.
مَا قَالُوا فِي الْمُرْتَدِّ كَمْ يُسْتَتَابُ

Hazrat Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the news of the conquest of Tustar was brought to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Tustar is an area of Basra, you (may Allah be pleased with you) asked the people, "What is the news from far away?" People submitted, "There was a Muslim man who had joined the polytheists, we captured him." You (may Allah be pleased with you) asked, "What did you do to him?" They said, "We killed him." You (may Allah be pleased with you) said, "Why did you not make him enter a house, and then you would close the door on him, meaning you would imprison him, and you would give him a little food every day, then you would ask him for repentance three times, then if he repented, then fine, otherwise you would kill him?!" Then you (may Allah be pleased with you) said, "O Allah! Neither am I a witness upon them, nor did I order them, and when I was informed about this matter, I was not happy about it."
حضرت عبد الرحمن (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ جب حضرت عمر (رض) کے پاس تستر کی فتح کی خبر لائی گئی ۔۔۔ تستر یہ بصرہ کا ایک علاقہ ہے ۔۔۔ آپ (رض) نے ان لوگوں سے پوچھا : دور دراز کی کیا خبر ہے ؟ لوگوں نے عرض کیا : مسلمانوں کا ایک آدمی تھا۔ جو مشرکین سے جا ملا۔ ہم نے اس کو پکڑ لیا۔ آپ (رض) نے پوچھا : کہ تم نے اس کے ساتھ کیا معاملہ کیا ؟ ان لوگوں نے کہا : ہم نے اس کو قتل کردیا۔ آپ (رض) نے فرمایا : تم نے اسے کسی گھر میں داخل کیوں نہ کیا اور پھر تم اس پر دروازہ بند کردیتے یعنی اس کو قید کردیتے اور تم اسے روزانہ تھوڑا سا کھانا دیتے پھر تین مرتبہ اس سے توبہ طلب کرتے پھر اگر وہ توبہ کرلیتا تو ٹھیک ورنہ تم اسے قتل کردیتے ؟ ! پھر آپ (رض) نے فرمایا : اے اللہ ! میں نہ ان پر گواہ ہوں اور نہ میں نے ان کو حکم دیا اور جب مجھے اس بات کی خبر ملی تو میں اس پر خوش نہ ہوا۔
Hazrat Abdul Rahman (RA) farmate hain ki jab Hazrat Umar (RA) ke paas Testar ki fatah ki khabar laayi gayi --- Testar yeh Basra ka aik ilaqa hai --- aap (RA) ne un logon se poocha: Door daraz ki kya khabar hai? Logon ne arz kiya: Musalmanon ka aik aadmi tha jo mushrikon se ja mila. Hum ne usko pakad liya. Aap (RA) ne poocha: Ki tum ne uske sath kya mamla kiya? Un logon ne kaha: Hum ne usko qatl kar diya. Aap (RA) ne farmaya: Tum ne use kisi ghar mein dakhil kiyon na kiya aur phir tum us par darwaza band karte yani usko qaid karte aur tum use rozana thoda sa khana dete phir teen martaba us se tauba talab karte phir agar wo tauba karleta to theek warna tum use qatl karte?! Phir aap (RA) ne farmaya: Aye Allah! Main na un par gawah hun aur na maine unko hukm diya aur jab mujhe is baat ki khabar mili to main is par khush na hua.
Hazrat Sulayman bin Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Usman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: An apostate should be asked to repent three times.
حضرت سلیمان بن موسیٰ (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت عثمان (رض) نے ارشاد فرمایا : مرتد سے تین مرتبہ توبہ طلب کی جائے گی۔
Hazrat Suleman bin Moosa (RA) farmate hain ki Hazrat Usman (RA) ne irshad farmaya: Murtad se teen martaba tauba talab ki jaye gi.
Hazrat Hayyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Imam Zuhri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "An apostate will be invited to Islam three times. So if he refuses, then his neck should be struck."
حضرت حیان (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ امام زہری (رض) نے ارشاد فرمایا : مرتد کو تین بار اسلام کی طرف بلایا جائے گا پس اگر وہ انکار کر دے تو اس کی گردن مار دی جائے گی۔
Hazrat Hayyan (RA) farmate hain ke Imam Zuhri (RA) ne irshad farmaya: Murtad ko teen bar Islam ki taraf bulaya jayega pas agar woh inkar kar de to uski gardan maar di jayegi.
Imam Shabi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A person who commits apostasy will be asked to repent three times. Then if he does it again, he will be killed."
امام شعبی (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت علی (رض) نے ارشاد فرمایا : مرتد سے تین مرتبہ توبہ طلب کی جائے گی ۔ پس اگر وہ دوبارہ ایسا کرے گا تو اس کو قتل کردیا جائے گا۔
Imam Shabi (RA) farmate hain keh Hazrat Ali (RA) ne irshad farmaya: Murtad se teen martaba tauba talab ki jaye gi. Pas agar woh dobara aisa kare ga to us ko qatl kar diya jaye ga.
Hadrat 'Abdul-Karim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the person who heard Hadrat Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) say that an apostate will be asked to repent three times.
حضرت عبد الکریم (رض) اس شخص سے نقل فرماتے ہیں جس نے حضرت ابن عمر (رض) کو یوں فرماتے ہوئے سنا کہ مرتد سے تین مرتبہ توبہ طلب کی جائے گی۔
Hazrat Abdul Kareem (RA) iss shakhs se naql farmate hain jisne Hazrat Ibn Umar (RA) ko yun farmate huye suna keh murtad se teen martaba tauba talab ki jaye gi.
Hazrat Waleed bin Jumay' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a governor of Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah be pleased with him) from Yemen wrote to him (Umar) that a man was a Jew, then he accepted Islam, then he returned to Judaism, and left Islam. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote in reply, "Invite him to Islam. If he accepts Islam, then leave him. If he refuses, then beat him with a stick. If he refuses, then hang him on a wooden cross. Then invite him to Islam. If he still refuses, then tie him up and put the tip of a spear on his chest. Then invite him to Islam again. So if he comes back, then leave him, and if he refuses, then kill him." When the letter arrived, the same was done with him until the tip of a spear was placed on his chest, then he was invited to Islam, he accepted Islam, so they left him.
حضرت ولید ابن جُمیع (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت عمر بن عبد العزیز کے ایک گورنر نے یمن سے آپ (رض) کو خط لکھا کہ ایک آدمی یہودی تھا اس نے اسلام قبول کرلیا پھر اس نے دوبارہ یہودیت کو اختیار کرلیا، اور اسلام سے پھر گیا۔ حضرت عمر (رض) نے اس کا جواب لکھا کہ اس کو اسلام کی دعوت دو ۔ اگر وہ اسلام لے آئے۔ تو اس کو چھوڑ دو اگر وہ انکار کر دے تو اس کو لکڑی کے ذریعہ مارو اگر وہ انکار کر دے تو اس کو لکڑی پر لٹا دو پھر اس کو اسلام کی طرف دعوت دو ، اگر پھر بھی انکار کر دے تو تم اس کو باندھو اور اس کے دل میں نیزہ کی نوک رکھ دو پھر دوبارہ اس کو اسلام کی طرف دعوت دو ۔ پس اگر وہ لوٹ آئے تو اس کو چھوڑ دو ، اور اگر انکار کر دے تو اس کو قتل کردو۔ جب خط آیا تو اس کے ساتھ ایسا ہی معاملہ کیا گیا یہاں تک کہ اس کے دل پر نیزہ کی نوک رکھ دی گئی پھر اس کو اسلام کی طرف دعوت دی وہ اسلام لے آیا تو انھوں نے اس کو چھوڑ دیا۔
Hazrat Waleed Ibn Jamee (RA) farmate hain keh Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz ke aik governor ne Yemen se aap (RA) ko khat likha keh aik aadmi Yehudi tha us ne Islam qubool karliya phir us ne dobara Yahoodit ko ikhtiyar karliya, aur Islam se phir gaya. Hazrat Umar (RA) ne is ka jawab likha keh us ko Islam ki dawat do. Agar wo Islam le aaye. To us ko chhor do agar wo inkar kar de to us ko lakdi ke zariya maro agar wo inkar kar de to us ko lakdi par latka do phir us ko Islam ki taraf dawat do, agar phir bhi inkar kar de to tum us ko bandho aur us ke dil mein neza ki nok rakho phir dobara us ko Islam ki taraf dawat do. Pas agar wo laut aaye to us ko chhor do, aur agar inkar kar de to us ko qatal kar do. Jab khat aaya to us ke sath aisa hi mamla kiya gaya yahan tak ke us ke dil par neza ki nok rakh di gayi phir us ko Islam ki taraf dawat di wo Islam le aaya to unhon ne us ko chhor diya.
Hazrat Ibn Juraij (RA) narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA) said: "A person who leaves Islam (apostate) should be asked to repent three times. If he returns (to Islam), then it is okay, otherwise he should be killed."
حضرت ابن جریج (رض) فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت عمر بن عبد العزیز (رض) نے ارشاد فرمایا : مرتد سے تین مرتبہ توبہ طلب کی جائے گی۔ پس اگر وہ لوٹ آئے تو ٹھیک ورنہ اس کو قتل کردیا جائے گا۔
Hazrat Ibn Juraij (RA) farmate hain ki Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (RA) ne irshad farmaya: Murtad se teen martaba toba talab ki jayegi. Pas agar wo laut aaye to theek warna us ko qatal kar diya jayega.
